PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The No. 6 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team breezed to a 4-0 win on Saturday afternoon, taking down visiting Buffalo State in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. First-years
Kayson Ruegge (Edmond, Okla./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) and
Tessa Morris (Grand Island, N.Y./Rome Girl's Hockey) scored the first two goals of the night, with Ruegge scoring the game-winner and Morris notching her first career goal.
The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are currently the No. 6 ranked team in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.
Graduate student
Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev./North American Hockey Academy) and first-year
Kate Conlon (New Hudson, Mich./Little Caesars) each had third-period goals for the Cardinals to seal the Plattsburgh win.
Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass./Northwood School) earned the shutout win, making nine saves as the Cardinals made any good offensive looks difficult for the Bengals.
Plattsburgh State outshot Buffalo State 36-9 on the evening, also going 1-3 on the power play and killing both of the Bengals' penalties.
The Cardinals improve to 4-1-1 (3-1-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next take on St. Norbert on Saturday, Nov. 30 in the opening game of the Cardinal/Panther Classic. Buffalo State falls to 2-3-1 (1-2-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and next plays at Hilbert College on Tuesday, Nov. 26, in a non-conference matchup.
Plattsburgh State set the tone early on in the action against Buffalo State, controlling play and putting three shots on goal in the first 30 seconds of the game's action.
The consistent offensive pressure didn't come to fruition, however, until the Cardinal's first power play opportunity just over 13 minutes into the game's action. Twenty seconds into the advantage, Ruegge tapped in a
Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) pass on the doorstep, giving the Cardinals the early lead.
Seoyoung Yoo (Yongin, Republic of Korea/Ontario Hockey Academy) also added an assist on the power play goal.
Just over two minutes later, Morris picked up her first collegiate goal after
Maeghan Forsyth (Billings, Mont./Notre Dame Hounds) had her pass tipped out of the slot to Morris, who finished the play with a score.
The 2-0 lead held through the first and then second intermission, with Plattsburgh State outshooting the Bengals 14-1 in a dominant second period despite not scoring.
In the third stanza, Olshansky added to the Cardinal lead with a highlight-reel breakaway score, as
Bridget Orr (Excelsior, Minn./North American Hockey Academy) freed up her counterpart with the stretch pass across the blueline.
Conlon sealed the win just over a minute later as she intercepted a pass along the boards behind the Buffalo State goalie, and then came back around for the wrap-around score.
Jessica Auge made 32 saves in the Bengal's loss, allowing four goal in 60 minutes.
