Women’s Volleyball Falls to New Paltz in Friday Night SUNYAC Action

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-17) to New Paltz in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday night.

Junior outside hitter Maggie Lyon (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa) led the offensive attack with 9.5 points after smashing down four kills, registering three service aces, and picking up a career-high five total blocks off of five block assists. Sophomore right-side hitter Darby Collyear (Rockwall, Texas, Rockwall) and middle blocker Katie Salphine (Le Roy, N.Y. / Le Roy) both had five points off of four kills on the offensive end and two block assists on the defensive end. Junior setter Kyleigh Ganz (Phoenix, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) tied for a game-high in assists distributing 17 on the night while also picking up a career-high three total blocks off of three block assists. Defensively, junior right-side hitter Melina Morillo (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx Latin) led the charge in digs with seven.

For the Hawks, Jamie Albrecht led the team in points with 10 from seven kills, two block assists, and two service aces to go along with eight digs. Letisha Perez led the team in kills with eight, Jordyn Lewis led all players in digs with nine, and Kim Braun had 15 assists.

The Cardinals had a slight edge in blocks 7-6 while the Hawks had the upper hand in service aces 12-7 and a 36-21 advantage in digs.

Plattsburgh State moves to 4-20 (0-8 SUNYAC) and next hosts Oneonta on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. Prior to the game, the team will honor their lone senior Lexi Carfi (Syracuse, N.Y. / Liverpool). New Paltz moves to 12-11 (5-3 SUNYAC) and next plays Potsdam on Saturday, Nov. 2.

After Collyear put down a kill that tied the score at 3 all, New Paltz scored five straight points and made the score 8-3 Hawks. The Cardinals responded with a 4-0 run that saw two service aces from Lyon and a kill from Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas / Bishop Lynch) that tied the score at 9 however a 7-0 surge from the Hawks led by two kills from Mirella Valluzzi put them back ahead 16-9. Back-to-back New Paltz points followed by a kill from Carfi made the score 20-12 Hawks. A 3-0 run from the Hawks made the score 24-13 Hawks but the Cardinals ripped off a 6-0 run led by three block assists from Lyon to come within five. A kill from Maria Weigand ended the Cardinals' run and put the first set away for the Hawks 25-19.

The Cardinals opened the second set with an 8-2 lead after two service aces from Morillo capped off a 4-0 run. New Paltz responded with a run of their own, scoring 10 straight as the Hawks took a 12-8 lead. A kill from Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. / Longwood) momentarily ended the run but the Hawks went on another run and extended their lead to 19-9. Salphine and Lyon both put down kills and made the score 19-11 however back-to-back points from New Paltz followed by a 4-0 run secured the Hawks a 25-13 second set victory.

The third and final set saw the Hawks jump out to an 11-3 lead. Mulvey and Ganz put down kills and made the score 13-5 Hawks. Back-to-back points from Lyon made the score 18-9 Hawks followed by a 4-0 run led by two kills from Salphine that made the score 19-13 Hawks. After trading 3-0 runs, the Hawks ended the third set with back-to-back points and won 25-17 to secure the overall match victory.
