The Cards next travel to Oswego State for a noon kickoff against the Lakes on Saturday, Oct. 19. New Paltz falls to 8-5-2 (4-1-1 SUNYAC) and next plays undefeated Buffalo State on Saturday, Oct. 19.
The first half saw very little action, with just seven total shots attempted between both teams.
Danny Perry (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) had the only shot of the half on goal, as his shot in the 33
rd minute was saved by the New Paltz keeper.
In the second half, Plattsburgh was able to generate more offense, earning five corners in the half and outshooting the Hawks 7-4. New Paltz did give themselves their best chance of the game despite limited opportunities in the second half, as Brian Boylan's shot from the left corner of the box was saved by Healy in the 58
th minute.
A corner in the 84
th minute set up the Cardinal's lone goal as the kick was initially wide and settled by the Plattsburgh offense before it wound up at the feet of Ashong. Ashong then found Coughlan along the top of the 18-yard box, where he was able to get separation from his defender and rip a shot toward the right goal post. The ball took a Plattsburgh bounce off the post and into the back of the net, giving the Cards the late lead.
Over the final six-plus minutes, the Cardinals held the Hawks without a shot, securing themselves the 1-0 win.
Christian Micheli made one save in 90 minutes of action in goal for the Hawks.
