Lindsay Guzzetta (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) set the single-season program record in goals and points and senior midfielder
Emma McLaughlin (Northport, N.Y./Northport) set the single-season program record in caused turnovers, as the Cardinals posted a 10-8 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over Fredonia on Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.
The Cardinals earned their sixth victory of the season to eclipse the former single-season program record of five wins set last year. Guzzetta finished the day with 32 goals on the year to break the single-season mark of 28 set by Frankie Porcaro in 2019 that she previously tied on Wednesday against SUNY Oneonta, and she also finished the game with 41 points on the season to better the former single-season record of 37 set by
Emily Caoili last year. McLaughlin ended the afternoon with 31 caused turnovers to better her former single-season record of 29 that she set last year.
Plattsburgh State rises to 6-8 overall (2-6 SUNYAC) with the win and hosts SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday, April 26, at 7 p.m. in the season finale for both teams. Prior to the start of the game, the Cardinals will honor the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX. Fredonia falls to 6-10 overall (1-7 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits SUNY Geneseo in its season finale on Wednesday, April 26, at 4 p.m.
The Blue Devils scored the first two goals of the game, with each marker being scored by first-year attacker/midfielder Cailin Karalus and assisted by junior midfielder Sydney Buchko. Guzzetta buried her record-breaking goal with 4:11 left in the first quarter on a free-position shot, while Fredonia's sophomore attacker Emma Cockerel scored with 19 seconds remaining to give the Blue Devils a 3-1 lead through 15 minutes of play.
Plattsburgh State pulled ahead with a six-goal second quarter. After the Blue Devils extended their lead to 4-1 after a free-position goal by sophomore midfielder Audrey Brown, Guzzetta scored five seconds later on an assist from McLaughlin. Sophomore defender/midfielder
Rachel LaMar (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) tallied unassisted and Guzzetta buried a free-position shot to tie the score at 4-all, while sophomore attacker
Maddy Garcia (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) handed the Cardinals a 5-4 advantage midway through the second. The Blue Devils knotted the score at 5-all nine seconds later on a Karalus marker (Brown assist), while Nash scored on a free-position shot and Guzzetta converted on a pass from McLaughlin to lead, 7-5, at the intermission.
McLaughlin found the back of the cage on a feed from Guzzetta to kick off scoring in the third quarter, but Fredonia's senior attacker Makayalla Farino tallied on a pass from Karalus to cut the gap back to two. Nash's unassisted goal midway through the frame wound up providing the score of 9-6 that held up through three quarters of play.
After McLaughlin scored with 8:49 remaining in the fourth quarter, Fredonia netted a pair of free position goals from senior attacker Julia Culver and Brown, respectively, to trim the deficit to 10-8. While the Blue Devils had a chance on an 8-meter shot with 2:39 to go in regulation, the shot went wide, and a Fredonia turnover gave the Cardinals the ball back with 1:40 left. Plattsburgh State ran nearly a minute off the clock before the Blue Devils regained possession, and Fredonia turned the ball over inside of 30 seconds to put the game on ice.
Plattsburgh State held the upper hand in shots (30-26), while Fredonia owned a 12-10 advantage in draw controls. Both teams finished with 16 ground balls. On clears, the Cardinals were 19-for-20, while the Blue Devils were 16-for-19.
Guzzetta paced the Cardinal attack with five points on four goals and one assist, while McLaughlin scored twice and added two assists. Defensively, McLaughlin scooped up four ground balls and caused three turnovers.
For Fredonia, Karalus led the way with four points on three goals and an assist, while Buchko aided in the possession game with five ground balls and four draw controls.
