Baseball Falls in One-Run Affair with Oswego State

OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team played a close game with the Oswego State Lakers on Friday afternoon, ultimately falling 4-3 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. With the loss, the Cardinals continue to have tough luck in one-run games, as they now are 1-5 in one-run SUNYAC games.

Kolby Mordecki (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) had a career day on the mound, setting career-highs with seven innings pitched and 11 strikeouts, but ended up taking the loss. Conner Gonzalski (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) was 2-4 at the plate on Friday, blasting a two-run homer in his second at-bat of the day, with Andrew Veit (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) also adding two hits and a double. Jack Defayette (Rotterdam, N.Y./Schalmont) had two hits, stole a base, and drove in a run while Adam Wein (North Rockland, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) was 2-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored.

Plattsburgh moves to 10-15 (3-7 SUNYAC) with the loss and will look to take the series with a doubleheader sweep tomorrow, which now begins at 10:30 a.m. on April 22. Oswego improved to 14-14 (7-3 SUNYAC) with the win, as they have now won seven straight SUNYAC games.

Oswego State jumped on the board first in a rematch of last year's opening game of the SUNYAC playoffs, with Jelani Hamer stealing home for the Lakers on a Julian Drew strikeout.

Plattsburgh responded immediately, as Gonzalski homered off of Oswego ace Kieran Finnegan to score himself and Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) and give Plattsburgh a 2-1 lead. Owen Parliment responded with a homer of his own in the following half-inning, tying the score up at two runs apiece.

In the top of the fourth, the Cards retook the lead, as Wein walked to lead off the inning. After a passed ball, the catcher moved to third with a sacrifice bunt, and Defayette singled through the left side in the next at-bat to give the Cards the lead.

The lead held for Plattsburgh over the next three innings, as they held the 3-2 lead until the bottom of the seventh. With two outs in the seventh and a runner on second, Jacob Levine homered for the Lakers, giving them a 4-3 lead. Anthony Van Fossen then entered for Oswego and tossed two shutdown innings to earn the save and give Oswego a series-opening win.

Kieran Finnegan earned the win on the mound for the Lakers, going seven innings, striking out 10, and giving up three runs, while Van Fossen earned the save with two innings of work and three strikeouts. Owen Parliment had two extra-base hits, a double and a homer, while Tishawn Featherstone also added two hits for Oswego.
