Women's Lacrosse Hangs With Oswego in Road SUNYAC Setback

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Despite a strong performance in the first half, the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team fell to Oswego State, 17-6, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium.
 
The Lakers held a 35-28 edge in shots, a 16-9 cushion in draw controls and a 19-17 advantage in ground balls while going 16-for-19 on clears. The Cardinals were 16-for-23 on clears, including a perfect 9-for-9 showing in the second half.
 
Plattsburgh State falls to 5-7 overall (1-5 SUNYAC) with the loss and next entertains SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday, April 19, at 4 p.m. Oswego rises to 10-3 overall (5-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits Buffalo State on Wednesday, April 19, at 4 p.m.
 
Oswego jumped out to a 3-0 lead before senior attacker Kate Kennedy (Waddington, N.Y./Massena) put the Cardinals on the board with 4:17 left in the first quarter. The Lakers received a woman-up goal on a free-position shot before first-year attacker Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) beat the horn with an unassisted goal with one second left in the opening quarter.
 
Sophomore midfielder Caitlin Nash (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) tallied a goal on a pass from senior midfielder Lindsay Guzzetta (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) before Oswego countered with two unanswered scores to take a 6-3 lead. Senior midfielder Emma McLaughlin (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Barnosky each buried unassisted strikes to pull within one, but the Lakers closed the half with a pair of goals by junior attacker Isabella Lembo to enter the intermission with an 8-5 advantage.
 
Oswego added a goal to its lead 3:25 into the third quarter before McLaughlin fired in an unassisted marker with 9:16 to go in the third to cut the gap back to three. The Lakers answered with an eight-goal run to close the game, scoring three times in the final 5:56 of the third quarter before netting five goals in the fourth.
 
McLaughlin and Barnosky led the Cardinal offense with two goals apiece, while Nash scooped up four ground balls.
 
For Oswego, senior midfielder Sela Wiley recorded 10 points on five goals and five assists in addition to controlling nine draws, while Lembo scored four times.
 
Senior goalie Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) made 10 saves in the loss for the Cardinals, while sophomore goalie Sarah Kamide turned aside 12 shots in the win for the Lakers.
