Cergol's Walk-Off Homer Helps Baseball to Wednesday Split Against Albertus Magnus

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Nick Cergol's (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) walk-off home run in game one against Albertus Magnus helped the Plattsburgh State baseball team to a split in non-conference action.

Cergol finished 4-6 on the day, with three hits in game one and a hit and walk in game two to lead the Cards' offense. Kyle Cremin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) was 3-6 between the two games, as the two corner infielders had seven of the team's 16 hits on the day.

The Cardinals move to 2-5 with the split and will rematch with Salem State tomorrow, March 16, looking to avenge their 6-2 loss last night. Albertus Magnus is now 3-4 on the season and will play Framingham State tomorrow, March 16, in doubleheader action beginning at 4 p.m.

Game One: Plattsburgh State 8, Albertus Magnus 7

Cergol played hero for the second time this season, as his second homer of the year was also a shot that gave his team the lead in the seventh inning. Plattsburgh scored eight runs on eight hits in the game and took advantage of five Albertus Magnus errors to help them to the win.

Cergol finished the first game 3-3 as he drove in three runs and scored twice. Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) finished 1-2 with three runs scored and an RBI as he was also hit twice. Conner Gonzalski (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) had a big two-run single and also scored a run for the Cards as Sean Malamud (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) earned the win as he pitched the top of the seventh and struck out the side in a scoreless frame of work.

After the Falcons scored a run in the top of the first inning, Plattsburgh was able to immediately tie the game, as Andrew Veit (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) led off the game with a base hit, moved to second on a wild pitch, and was brought home by a Kornblau single. Kornblau eventually came around to score and give Plattsburgh the early lead on a Cergol sac fly.

In the top of the third, the Falcon bats came alive for six runs on six hits to go up 7-2. Plattsburgh was able to get a run across on a Cergol RBI single in the bottom of the inning but stranded two runners to keep the deficit at 7-3.

After a scoreless fourth from both teams and a scoreless top of the fifth from Albertus Magnus, the Cards finally got the big inning they had been looking for as they took advantage of two errors, scoring four runs on three hits. A Kornblau hit-by-pitch, a Cremin walk, and a Cergol single loaded the bases for Gonzalski, who singled home two runs to cut the deficit in half to just two runs. A bunt attempt from Plattsburgh was errantly fielded as the run scored, putting two runners in scoring position. A fielding error loaded the bases and Ben Catrambone (Niskyauna, N.Y./ Niskayuna) came through, singling home the tying run with a base hit to left center.

After Albertus escaped in the bottom of the fifth with just a tied game, both teams went scoreless in the sixth, and Malamud struck out the side to set up the walk-off moment. Cergol led off the bottom of the seventh inning and deposited a Falcon offering deep over the right-field fence to give the Cards the win.

Chris Santic (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) was solid in relief for Plattsburgh State, as he worked 3.1 innings and gave up just two earned runs while striking out three and walking none.

Game Two: Albertus Magnus 2, Plattsburgh State 1

The Plattsburgh State baseball team fell in a pitcher's duel in game two, as the Falcons walked off on a wild pitch to get the win and earn a split. Albertus Magnus scored single runs in the first and seventh, while Plattsburgh scored their only run in the fourth. The Cardinals couldn't find the big hit in game two, leaving 11 runners on base as they were able to produce eight hits and four walks.

Cremin and Nick Goldberg (Commack, N.Y./Commack) each reached base three times in the loss, with both singling twice and walking once while Cremin also had a stolen base. Justin Osborn (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) had a solid start for the Cards, going 4.2 innings and giving up just three hits and one earned run while striking out five. Kolby Mordecki (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) struck out three in 1.2 innings of work, giving up just one hit and walking one.

The Falcons were able to go up 1-0 early with an RBI double in the bottom of the first, but Osborn settled in for three more scoreless innings before being relieved with two outs in the fifth.

The Cardinals tied the game up in the fourth, as Mike Rasquin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Goldberg had back-to-back singles to put two runners on. Veit followed with a groundball to the pitcher that was thrown away, allowing Rasquin to score and tie the game.

The game remained tied at one run apiece until the bottom of the seventh, as the Falcons were able to load the bases with two outs thanks to two Cardinal errors. A wild pitch then allowed the game-winning run to score and give Albertus Magnus a win.

Malamud was tagged with the loss, while Christian Corliss earned a complete game win for the Falcons, striking out three and walking four while giving up eight hits.
