MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – In another high-scoring affair, the Plattsburgh State Baseball team fell to the University of Scranton 15-7 in the team's opening game in Myrtle Beach. Despite a strong effort from the top of the Cardinal order, eight errors doomed Plattsburgh on Sunday.
Christian Ott (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) finished 2-4 on the day and drove in two runs, adding a double, a single, and a run scored.
The Cards fall to 1-3 on the season and will next play Worcester St. in a single nine-inning game on March 13 at 1 p.m. Scranton moves to 5-4 on the year and will match up with New England College on March 13.
The Royals took an early 1-0 lead, scratching a run across in the first inning before tacking on five more in the third to go up 6-0 before Plattsburgh had even gotten more than six batters to the plate. In the fourth, Scranton added two more runs to go up 8-0 over the Cards, with half of their eight runs coming as unearned.
In the bottom of the fourth, however, the Cardinal bats awoke, as they cut the Scranton lead in the half with a four-run frame.
Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) began the inning with a walk and moved to second on a base-hit from
Kyle Cremin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) to put two runners on. A hit-by-pitch loaded the base as for Ott, who doubled to left-centerfield to get the Cards on the board. Another walk loaded the bases again, which was followed by an
Andrew Veit (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) fielder's choice, which brought in a run and then brought in another after an error by the shortstop scored Ott from second base.
A scoreless top half of the fifth gave the Cards another chance to cut into the lead and the team was able to do just that, as
Jack Defayette (Rotterdam, N.Y./Schalmont) tripled home a run and then came in to score on a Cremin ground out, cutting the lead to just two runs with the score being 8-6.
In the top of the sixth, however, Scranton put the game out of reach for the Cards, as they tacked on five runs on three hits and three errors to take a 13-6 lead.
Plattsburgh would tack on one more run in the seventh while Scranton scored twice in the ninth to bring the final score to 15-7.
Graduate student
Sean Malamud (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) was tagged with the loss for his three innings of work, giving up four earned runs. For Scranton, Mike Fox earned the win in relief while Jack Heineman drove in six runs on three hits for the Royals.
