Men's Lacrosse Drops 15-10 Decision to University of New England

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Despite a seven-goal second period, the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team fell, 15-10, to the University of New England in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Blue Bolt Field.
 
The Nor'easters finished with a 41-39 edge in shots and a 34-33 cushion in ground balls, while both teams were 14-for-28 on face-offs. On clears Plattsburgh State was 15-for-22, while UNE was 13-for-16. The Cardinals scored one goal on nine extra-man opportunities, while the Nor'easters were 1-for-3 with the extra man.
 
Plattsburgh State falls to 2-2 overall with the loss and next hosts Plymouth State University in its home opener on Wednesday, March 15, at 11 a.m. UNE rises to 3-3 overall with the win and next takes on New England College in Sparks Glencoe, Md., on Thursday, March 16, at 4 p.m.
 
UNE jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, as first-year midfielder Shea Fogarty, junior attackman Andrew Lawrence, junior attackman Sam McGregor (senior midfielder Colin Watt assist) and junior midfielder Jordan White all scored to give the Nor'easters the edge through 15 minutes of play.
 
Plattsburgh State countered with a four-goal run. Junior midfielder Logan Jones (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) put the Cardinals on the board 1:27 into the second period, cashing in on a feed from sophomore attackman Mike Walsh (Westchester, N.Y./Lakeland), while junior attackman John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) scored unassisted 1:04 later. Junior midfielder Anthony Faber (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) scored his first collegiate goal with 11:27 to go in the second, while senior midfielder Gustav Rugg (Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) tallied man-up on a feed from Walsh midway through the period to knot the game at 4-all.
 
Senior midfielder Ryan Hazard (White assist) and McGregor (first-year attackman Finn McCoy assist) pushed the UNE edge back out to two, while Plattsburgh State scored three goals in a span of 2:14 to take a 7-6 lead. During that tear, senior midfielder Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) scored twice, while Walsh had two assists and Faber scored once. The Nor'easters scored the final two goals of the half, with Watt tallying man-up (Hazard assist) and White scoring with 10 seconds left (Lawrence assist) to give UNE an 8-7 advantage at the intermission.
 
Eiseman's goal, which came off a pass from Walsh, 54 seconds into the third quarter squared the tally at 8-all, while UNE pulled away with a six-goal spurt; during that surge, White scored three goals, while Watt tallied twice. Sophomore midfielder Donald Woods (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) connected with Eiseman for a goal with 58 seconds left in the third to cut the gap to 14-9 heading into the final regulation frame.
 
Walsh scored with 11:06 remaining in the fourth quarter to trim the deficit to four, but UNE held Plattsburgh State scoreless down the stretch, and Fogarty netted an insurance goal with 5:41 left.
 
Walsh led the way for the Cardinals with a career-high six points, which he achieved off a goal and five assists. Eiseman tallied a career-high five points on three goals and two assists, while junior midfielder Chris Falborn (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) went 8-for-15 at the 'X.'
 
For UNE, White had six points on five goals and an assist, while Hazard, Watt and Lawrence all recorded four points. Defensively, senior defenseman Cole Ventimiglia led the way with four caused turnovers.
 
Junior goalie Dan Clements (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) made 11 saves in the loss for Plattsburgh State, while senior goalie Alex Thoms turned aside nine shots in the win for UNE.
