Winning Streak Balloons to 14 in No. 3 Women's Ice Hockey's 5-0 Win Over Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The No. 3 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team cruised to a 5-0 Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) win over Buffalo State on Friday afternoon at the Buffalo State Ice Arena to extend its winning streak to 14 games.

Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 3 in the DCU/USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-15 Poll.

The Cardinals finished with a 52-18 edge in shots on goal and went 1-for-6 on the power play. The Bengals were 0-for-4 with the extra skater.

Plattsburgh State rises to 22-2-0 overall (16-1-0 NEWHL) with the win, while Buffalo State falls to 7-17-0 overall (1-16-0 NEWHL) with the loss. The two teams will face off again tomorrow at 2 p.m. in what will be the Cardinals' regular-season finale.

The Cardinals opened scoring with two goals in a span of 21 seconds early in the first period. Senior forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) fired the opening salvo at 3:14 of the first, as first-year defenseman Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.J./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) took a shot from the slot that deflected off graduate student forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) before Boric buried the rebound along the left goal line extended. Krauseneck doubled the Plattsburgh State advantage at 3:35 of the first, as Balfour chipped the puck to senior forward Julia Masotta (Tewksbury, Mass./Norwich University) along the left wall, and Krauseneck buried a one-time shot off a feed from Masotta.

Sophomore forward Bridget Orr (Excelsior, Minn./North American Hockey Academy) scored her first goal of the year at 10:47 of the first period. First-year forward Emma McLean (Burlington, Mass./Pomfret School) took a shot from the slot that deflected off sophomore forward Lily Stumm's (Cranberry Township, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) back, and Orr collected the rebound at the bottom of the right circle. Orr skated around to the inside edge of the right circle and uncorked a shot that beat the goalie high glove side.

After a scoreless second period, Masotta added another goal to the Cardinals' cause at 12:32 of the third, scoring on the power play. Graduate student forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) skated end to end before passing over to Masotta inside the right circle. Masotta received the pass and beat the netminder on a high shot glove side. Sophomore defenseman Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) also earned an assist on the play.

Sophomore forward Riley Calhoun (New Hartford, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) closed out scoring at 17:41 of the third. Senior defenseman Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./HoneyBaked) sent a pass down to McLean in the left circle, and McLean took a shot that was blocked out in front before Calhoun clapped in the rebound.

Graduate student goaltender Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School) posted an 18-save shutout in the win for the Cardinals, while sophomore goaltender Jessica Auge turned aside 47 shots in the loss for the Bengals.
