Lanyi wasted no time putting the Cardinals on the board, firing the opening salvo at 2:09 of the first period. Junior forward
Trey Thomas (Williams Lake, British Columbia/Brooks Bandits) flicked a centering pass to Lanyi in the slot, and Lanyi skated into the right circle before scoring on the backhand blocker side.
Just 29 seconds later, Tretowicz made it a two-goal game. Senior defenseman
Ryan Hogg (Duncan, British Columbia/Islanders Hockey Club) sent a short pass to Bryer in the defensive zone to start the breakout, and Bryer helped Tretowicz gain the zone with a pass up to the Bears' blue line. Tretowicz skated into the slot and scored through the five-hole.
Potsdam cut the lead in half with 6:25 gone in the first. Junior forward Jack Loran passed ahead to graduate student forward Robert Clerc in the neutral zone, and Clerc passed back to sophomore defenseman Drew Rose on the left point once he entered the attacking zone. Rose then took a shot that Clerc deflected into the back of the net.
The Bears tied the game with a power-play goal that came on a five-minute major, as first-year forward Mason Hoehn took a shot that redirected off traffic out in front, while graduate student forward Michael McArthur banged in the rebound from the bottom of the right circle. Senior defenseman Ryan Lieth also earned an assist on the play.
Hale gave the Cardinals a lead they would not relinquish 4:49 into the second period, scoring on the power play. Sophomore defenseman
Jack Ring (Hingham, Mass./Northeast Generals) passed D-to-D to first-year forward
Colin Callanan (Stony Point, N.Y./New York Apple Core), and Callanan sent a pass down low to a wide-open Hale in the slot. Hale dragged the puck across the crease and beat the goaltender low glove side.
Bryer entered the scoring column at the 11:52 mark of the second. Tretowicz centered a pass to junior forward
Thomas Maia (Mississauga, Ontario/Nanaimo Clippers) just outside the crease, and Maia fed Bryer with a short pass in the slot. Bryer, who was crashing the net, backhanded a shot into the back of the goal to double the Plattsburgh State advantage.
Lanyi added insurance with his second goal of the game at 18:43 of the second. Senior defenseman
Jacob Modry (Albany, N.Y./Merrimack College) banked a stretch pass off the boards along the right wing to spring first-year forward
Joshua Belgrave (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Cougars) free, and Belgrave centered a pass to Lanyi on the rush that Lanyi buried stick side.
Potsdam got a goal back at 3:43 of the third period, as first-year forward Max Klanow won an offensive-zone face-off back to senior forward Justin Vernace, and Vernace scored blocker side from the high slot.
The Bears pulled their goalie in favor of the extra attacker with 2:11 remaining in regulation and had just three shots to show for it, only one of which was on target.
Sophomore goaltender
Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) earned the win in goal for the Cardinals, making 25 saves, while senior goaltender Connor Green shouldered the loss for the Bears with a 49-save effort.
