FREDONIA, N.Y. – The No. 2 Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team bounced back with a win on Saturday after two-straight losses, taking down Fredonia 4-1 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. After the Blue Devils broke a scoreless tie, Plattsburgh scored four unanswered goals to take the road victory.
The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are currently the No. 2 ranked team in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.
Paul Bryer (Clarkston, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club),
Tio D'Addario (Montreal, Quebec/Navan Grads),
Luk Jirousek (Whitehorse, Yukon/Alberni Valley Bulldogs), and
Bennett Stockdale (Ottawa, Ontario/Alabama Huntsville) each scored goals for the Cards in the win.
Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) made 19 saves in net to earn his sixth win of the season for the Cardinals. D' Addario,
Joshua Belgrave (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Cougars),
Lonan Bulger (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories/Hobart),
Aaron Catron (Middletown, Del./Philadelphia Little Flyers), and
Jake Lanyi (North Salem, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) all added assists for the Cards in the four-score effort.
The Cardinals outshot the Blue Devils 34-20, while each went scoreless on the power play, with Plattsburgh going 0-5 and Fredonia 0-4.
Plattsburgh wrapped up the calendar year with their win over Fredonia moving to 10-2-0 (6-2-0 SUNYAC) and will next play against Rivier on Friday, Jan. 5 in the Comfort Inn Complex Winter Classic. Fredonia moves to 3-9-0 (3-6-0 SUNYAC) and will next play SUNY Brockport in a non-league contest on Tuesday, Jan. 9.
The first period was a scoreless affair between both teams, with Plattsburgh winning the shot battle 12-4 but having nothing to show for it. Each team had a power play opportunity, but the opposition killed each chance.
In the second stanza, both teams found their offensive footing, as Kurri Woodford broke the tie at the 7:53 mark off a Baxter Kimball assist. The lead held for just under five minutes, as Bryer found the equalizer with a fantastic wrap-around score as he lost his footing off a Belgrave pass.
Plattsburgh didn't wait long to take the lead as they scored at the 14:47 mark, as a Bulger shot from the point was deflected in just outside the crease by D'Addario for the goal. The 2-1 score held through the end of the period, as Plattsburgh entered the third period looking to snap their two-game skid.
Jirousek opened the third period of play with a big insurance goal off a Catron assist, putting the Cardinals up two goals. With the two-score lead, Plattsburgh was able to rely on their defense and strong play from Hearne as they held the Blue Devils from scoring over the entire third period, killing a penalty in that time. Stockdale sealed the win for the Cards with an empty netter with just under 30 seconds to go, giving Plattsburgh their 10
th win of the season.
Anthony-Charles Barbeau took the loss in just under 60 minutes of play, making 30 saves and allowing three goals.
