Women's Volleyball Falls to Union in Final Tune-Up Before SUNYAC Tournament

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team fell, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-13), to non-conference Union College in its regular-season and home finale on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.

Union hit .200 (41-16-125) as a team and owned the upper hand in service aces (10-4) and blocks (4-2), while Plattsburgh State held a 58-53 advantage in digs.

First-year right side Darby Collyear (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall) posted a team-high six kills to lead the Cardinals, while senior setter Emma Rivers (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown West) and sophomore setter/right side Kyleigh Ganz (Phoenix, Ariz./Seton Catholic Prep) each dished out 10 assists. Defensively, senior libero Payton Zophy (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) tallied 18 digs.

For Union, first-year middle hitter Maddie McCarron and senior right side Keara Page landed 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while senior setter Brooke Fleming had a double-double with 13 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore libero Georgia Pool defended 18 digs and posted four service aces.

Plattsburgh State falls to 12-12 overall with the loss and visits third-seeded SUNY Geneseo in the first round of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. Union finishes its season at 13-13 overall.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first set before Union rattled off five straight points to take a 17-13 advantage. Plattsburgh State pulled within two following a kill by first-year middle hitter Katarina Wagner (Seattle, Wash./Foxcroft School [Va.]) and a Garnet Charger attacking error, but Union scored four unanswered points on two separate occasions down the stretch to take the first, 25-18.

Plattsburgh State led in the early stages of the second set, with a kill by sophomore outside hitter Maggie Lyon (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) pinning the Cardinals to a 10-6 advantage. Union scored five straight points to take the lead, and while a Lyon kill knotted the score at 11-all, the Garnet Chargers never trailed from that point forward. The Cardinals eventually tied the score at 21-all following a Union service error and a kill by first-year outside hitter Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas/Bishop Lynch), but the Garnet Chargers closed the set on a 4-0 tear to claim the second, 25-21.

Union controlled the third set from the early going, as the visitors jumped out to a 9-0 lead. A 5-0 Plattsburgh State run that included three kills by Collyear cut the gap to 12-7, but the Cardinals were unable to score consecutive points from that point forward. Union clinched the match victory with a 25-13 win in the third.
