Women's Basketball Wins Thriller on the Road

Canton, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team won a close game on the road. With the game tied 56-56, Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) made an important three that put the Cardinals ahead for good 59-58. The Cardinals got insurance points from Mya Smith (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Roy C. Ketcham) who knocked down two free throws to secure the win 61-58. 

The leading scorer for the Cardinals was Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y. / Saranac) with 20 points and she added five rebounds on top of that. There were also contributions from Greek who dished out 17 points, and Smith who had 13. 

For the Saints, Jackie Malley led with 17 points. Elizabeth Flynn added 12 points and 18 rebounds as she recorded her second double-double in a row. 

Plattsburgh rises to 2-0 and St. Lawrence falls to 0-2. Plattsburgh will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 17th in the Cardinal Classic with a matchup against Bates College at 7 pm. St. Lawrence will also be back in action on Friday, Nov. 17th in the Middlebury Classic with a matchup against Springfield College at 7 pm. 

The Cardinals opened the game with a three from Smith. After two minutes of game time, St. Lawrence settled into the game with a jumper from Cam Roberts. With under six minutes to play, Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) hit a three to give the Cardinals an 8-4 lead. The Saints responded with a jumper from Abby Doin to make the score 8-6 Cardinals. Shortly after, Smith got three the hard way on an and-one layup that gave the Cardinals an 11-6 lead. To close the first, Flynn of the Saints made a jumper to make the score 14-12 Cardinals after one. 

Much like the first, the second quarter was back and forth. The Cardinals opened the quarter with three points and the Saints responded with two. After two minutes of play, Shannon Rhone of the Saints hit a three to make the score 19-18 Cardinals. At the 5:51 mark, the Cardinals went on a 5-0 run with a jumper from Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) and a three from Smith. The Saints' Annie Perry got the layup plus the foul to make the score 24-21 to stop the Cardinals' run. To close the first half the Cardinals got contributions from Couture, Bri Brousseau (Peru, N.Y. / Peru), and Peterson-Ross to extend their lead to 31-21. 

Roberts opened the third quarter with a layup to cut into the Cardinals' lead, but Couture responded with a layup of her own that kept the lead at 10. With 6:31 to play Greek hit a three that forced a Saints timeout with the Cardinals' lead being extended to 12. Under five minutes to go the Saints and Cardinals traded buckets with a three from Margaret Dougher and a three from Greek that made the score 41-29 Cardinals. The Saints closed the quarter with buckets from Elizabeth Flynn and Shannon Rhone to cut the score to 46-41 Cardinals. 

One minute into the fourth, the Saints cut the lead to two on a three from Malley. The Cardinals quickly extended their lead with layups from Couture and Walcott to make the score 50-44 Cardinals. Midway through the fourth Couture made a layup to keep the Cardinals ahead 52-47 but the Saints did not go away as Perry made a three to cut the lead to two. In a close battle, the Saints did not go away and under four minutes to play they cut the lead to one on a three from Malley. It was Malley again as she made a three to tie the game 56-56 with less than two minutes to play. With less than a minute left in the game, Greek made a go-ahead three to put the Cardinals ahead for good 59-56 but Flynn responded with a layup to cut that lead to one. The Saints pressed the Cardinals to try to get the ball back but fouled Smith and she made both free throws to make the score 61-58. The Saints had the last possession of the game, but the Cardinals held defensively to get the 61-58 win.
