Women's Volleyball Tops Oswego, 3-1, to Earn First SUNYAC Win of 2023

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team earned its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win of the season on Friday evening at Memorial Hall, topping visiting Oswego State, 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-18).

The Cardinals hit .158 (48-26-139) for the match and owned the upper hand in service aces (8-3), blocks (11-3) and digs (61-57). The Lakers, who hit .231 in the opening frame, wound up being limited to .109 hitting for the evening.

First-year right side Darby Collyear (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall) and sophomore middle hitter Jeannette Ashong (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) led the attack with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while Ashong posted six total blocks (three solo, three assist). Senior libero Payton Zophy (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) led the back row defensively with 20 digs, while senior setter Emma Rivers (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown West) distributed 22 assists.

For Oswego, senior middle hitter Georgia Farry notched 10 kills, while junior right side Emily Zeisler handed out 21 assists. Senior libero Kaylee Troy shored up the back row with 17 digs, while Zeisler completed the double-double with 12 digs.

Plattsburgh State rises to 8-6 overall (1-2 SUNYAC) with the win and hosts two-time-defending SUNYAC champion SUNY Cortland tomorrow at 1 p.m. Oswego falls to 3-11 overall (0-2 SUNYAC) with the loss and visits SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 1 p.m.

While Oswego held an 18-15 lead in the first set, the Cardinals went on a 3-1 run that included kills from Zophy and first-year middle hitter Katarina Wagner (Seattle, Wash./Foxcroft School [Va.]) to pull within one at 19-18, but the Lakers scored six of the set's final seven points to claim the opening stanza by a 25-19 score.

The Cardinals slowly pulled away from the Lakers midway through the second set, with a 4-0 tear that included two Collyear kills pinning the home team to a 19-11 advantage. Oswego eventually drew back within three at 23-20, but the Lakers ultimately ran out of room in a 25-21 second-set setback.

Plattsburgh State reversed an 11-9 deficit into a 14-11 advantage on the strength of a 5-0 run, which first-year outside hitter/right side Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) helped power with three kills. Oswego twice pulled within one before Plattsburgh State broke the set open with a four-point tear and a five-point surge. A kill by Wagner handed the Cardinals a 25-17 victory in the third.

The Cardinals never trailed in the fourth set, jumping out to an 8-1 lead thanks in part to first-year outside hitter Liya Girma's (Sachse, Texas/Bishop Lynch) performance at the service line. The Lakers eventually made it a three-point set at 19-16, but an Oswego service error, an Oswego attacking error and a Wagner solo block gave Plattsburgh State a comfortable 22-16 edge. The Lakers were unable to score consecutive points down the stretch, as the Cardinals capped off the match triumph with a 25-18 win in the fourth.
