PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team got an early goal to go against St. Lawrence, but ended up falling 3-1 to the Saints in non-conference play.
Sophia Hatziyianis (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) scored the lone goal for the Cardinals in the loss.
Hatziyianis registered her score almost immediately, scoring in the 2
nd minute, assisted by defender
Zoe Rice (Leicester, Mass./Leicester).
Lily Bailey (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) made her first career start in goal and made four saves playing all 90 minutes.
The Cards fall to 3-4-3 with the loss and now look towards a home tilt with league opponent Fredonia on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. The team will also celebrate 10 seniors on Saturday before the start of the game's action. St. Lawrence moves to 4-3-3 with the win and have RIT next on their schedule in a road conference match on Saturday, Oct. 7
Overall in the game action, the play between both teams was fairly even, with the shot difference being just three in the favor of St. Lawrence. The Saints took 14 shots and put seven on goal, while Plattsburgh attempted 11 shots and put five on goal. Plattsburgh also earned more corners, earning three to St. Lawrence's one.
The Cardinals put the first ball in the back of the net just before the third minute, as the team earned a corner kick to set up the play. Rice took the corner kick and placed a beautiful ball into the box, where the 5'8" Hatziyianis was able to rise over everyone and place the shot into the back of the goal. The score marked the second of the season for the senior midfielder, a new career high.
From then on, St. Lawrence was able to capitalize on their chances while Plattsburgh was not able to hit the back of the net for a second time. The Saints tied the game in the 21
st minute, as Megan Donahue scored off a Zoe Rogan assist. They were able to take the lead in the 37
th minute, as Madison King-Thurber scored off a Mia Cence assist, giving St. Lawrence the lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Cardinals had their opportunities to score and tie the game, highlighted by a penalty kick in the 54
th minute. The shot was saved, however, by the Saints' keeper, keeping the visiting St. Lawrence team in the lead.
After several chances for each squad over the ensuing 20-plus minutes, St. Lawrence sealed the win with a 79th-minute goal from Emma Reynolds, with Natalie Schock picking up the assist.
For the Saints, Keely Snode played 82 minutes to earn the win, making four saves and allowing one goal.
Plattsburgh will celebrate ten seniors before the game on Saturday, Oct. 7:
