PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-11) non-conference victory over St. Lawrence University on Tuesday evening at Memorial Hall.
The Cardinals hit .250 (30-9-84) for the match and limited the Saints to just .020 (27-25-99) hitting. Plattsburgh State held the upper hand in service aces (8-3) and blocks (10-2), while St. Lawrence owned a slight 40-37 edge in digs.
Sophomore middle hitter
Jeannette Ashong (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) led the Cardinals with 10 kills and four block assists, while senior setter
Emma Rivers (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown West) and sophomore setter/right side
Kyleigh Ganz (Phoenix, Ariz./Seton Catholic Prep) combined for 21 assists. Senior libero
Payton Zophy (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) defended 14 digs, while first-year middle hitter
Katarina Wagner (Seattle, Wash./Foxcroft School [Va.]) posted a career-high six total blocks (one solo, five assist).
For St. Lawrence, senior outside hitter/middle hitter Vivian Zymeck paced the attack with 10 kills, while first-year setter Vanessa Latam distributed 17 assists.
Plattsburgh State rises to 12-10 overall with the win and next hosts Skidmore College on Friday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. St. Lawrence falls to 4-19 overall with the loss and next hosts SUNY Cortland on Friday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m.
After St. Lawrence tied the score at 6-all in the first, Plattsburgh State rattled off six straight points, and a service ace by Ashong put the home team out in front, 12-6. While the Saints twice pulled within four points, Plattsburgh State scored four of the set's final five points to take the first, 25-17.
The Cardinals reversed a 13-11 Saint advantage into a 14-13 Plattsburgh State lead in the second set, and after the two teams traded points, the Cardinals pulled ahead on the strength of a 4-1 surge. A block assist by first-year middle hitter
Katie Salphine (Le Roy, N.Y./Le Roy) and Ashong put Plattsburgh State up, 23-19. St. Lawrence was unable to pull any closer than two points the rest of the way, as the Cardinals won the second by a 25-22 score.
Plattsburgh State cruised in the third set, constructing an 8-2 lead early. St. Lawrence scored consecutive points just three times in the stanza, as the Cardinals sealed the match victory with a 25-11 win in the third.
