Hayes Posts Second Brace of 2023 as Men's Soccer Concludes Regular Season with Tie Against St. Lawrence

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team completed their regular season schedule on Wednesday night, tying with St. Lawrence 2-2 in a non-conference match. John Hayes (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) put together his second brace of the season, scoring a goal in each half to lead the Cardinals to the tie.

With his two goals, Hayes finishes as the season leader in goals for Plattsburgh, moving ahead of Brian Coughlan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) who tallied six scores on the year. Dylan Shalvey (Cavan, Ireland/Peekskill (N.Y.)) picked up the lone assist of the game. In goal, Teddy Healy (Amityville, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) picked up the tie, making four saves to move his record to 6-3-6 on the year.

Plattsburgh finishes their regular season schedule at 7-3-6, finishing up a solid season despite missing out on the conference playoffs. St. Lawrence moves to 7-4-4 on the season and plays Hobart in a huge Liberty League game on Saturday, Oct. 28, as the top two seeds in the league battle it out.

In the game action, Plattsburgh State came out with a quick and aggressive attack, putting three shots on goal early in the game and earning two corners before 10 minutes of action had passed.

The aggressive action continued from both sides and culminated in an opportunity for St. Lawrence in the 13thminute, Healy committed a foul on a Saints' player in the box coming out for a ball aggressively, setting up a penalty kick for the visiting team. Max Mogul was the choice for the kick and he went to his left in his attempt on goal, but Healy made a diving save to keep the game scoreless and more than make up for the foul he committed to give the Saints the kick.

Over the next seven minutes, the Cardinals attempted three more shots before Hayes finally got a ball to hit the back of the net. Working off a nice pass through a couple of defenders and in isolation on the right side of the box, Hayes was able to make his way through his defender, chipping the ball off of the defender and past him, and then taking a shot at the far corner post, where it hit and bounced in.

St. Lawrence was quick to respond, putting up a score in the 23rd minute of the foot of Mogul from Henry Brown. St. Lawrence then opened up their barrage of offense, attempting four shots in two minutes. They would take the lead in the 39th minute when Sam Pijipers connected on a deep shot from just outside the 18, assisted by Henry Brown.

Leading 2-1 at the half, the Saints actually trailed in shots, 12-9 to Plattsburgh, while the Cardinals earned four corner kicks to St. Lawrence's one.

The second half saw Plattsburgh continue to press on the offense end, but it took a bit longer to pay dividends, as their goal did not come until the 75th minute. Offense was a bit harder to come by for both teams, as the shot battle was won by Plattsburgh 6-5 in the second period.

Hayes scored the equalizer in the 75th minute, thanks in large part to the work of Shalvey. The senior midfielder controlled a ball in the box and worked to get an angle around his defender on the right side of the box before ripping a shot that was saved. On the rebound, the ball found its way right to Hayes who was wide open for the second attempt and score.

The Cards had a couple more chances down the stretch, including a free kick from just inside midfield within the last minute, but could not connect on a strong attempt, settling for the tie.

With the regular season ended and no conference tournament games on the docket, the team is likely to have concluded the careers of seven seniors: Kevin Abbondanza (Rye, N.Y./Rye), Christian Garner (Port Saint Lucie, Fla./Monroe Woodbury), Jack Healy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), Frankie Palumbo (Walkill, N.Y./Walkill), Matthew Pitarresi (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell), Dylan Shalvey (Cavan, Ireland/Peekskill (N.Y.)), and Marcial Vasquez (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane).
