PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team competed in their final exhibition game of the 2023-24 season on Saturday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena, defeating the visiting University of Saint Michael's Purple Knights in a rout, 12-1. Three players scored twice, with multiple players having three or more points in the rout.
Junior forward
Jake Lanyi (North Salem, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers (NCDC)) scored the team's first goal to tie the game early in the action and scored in the third-period onslaught to open up that period's scoring.
Ryan Bonfield (Kemptville, Ontario/Brockville Braves (CCHL)) and
Luk Jirousek (Whitehorse, Yukon/Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL)) also scored twice for the Cards in the blowout.
Dominik Bovan (Bratislava, Slovakia/Boston Jr. Bruins (USPHL Premier)) made the start in goal making two saves over 31 minutes for the win, while
Eli Shiller (Toronto, Ontario/Wellington Dukes (OJHL)) played over 28 minutes making five saves.
The Cardinals finished the game with a 60-8 edge in shots on goal and went 6-14 on the power play, and 6-9 in the third period. The Purple Knights went 0-8 on the power play, as the Cards were successful in the penalty defense throughout the game's entirety.
Plattsburgh State opens up their 2023-24 regular season on the road on Friday, Oct. 27, as they travel to Saint Anselm College for their first action of the year next week. They return home the next day for their home opener, taking on Castleton on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Saint Michael's also wrapped up their exhibition games, as they begin their season against Manhattanville on Friday, Oct. 27.
The first goal of the game came off the stick of a Purple Knight, as Hans Forselius knocked in the first goal just over four minutes into the action. The Cardinals quickly answered with a Lanyi goal to equalize the score, as
Jack Ring (Hingham, Mass./Northeast Generals (NAHL)) notched the assist. Just under five minutes later,
Joshua Belgrave (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Cougars (OJHL)) deflected in a
Kevin Weaver-Vitale (Toronto, Ontario/Markham Royals (OJHL)) shot attempt for the lead, one Plattsburgh would not relinquish.
In the second period, Plattsburgh added two more scores to build up their lead, as Jirousek notched a score of the sticks of Bonfield and
Ryan Hogg (Duncan, British Columbia/Brooks Bandits (AJHL)) and
Aaron Catron (Middletown, Del./Philadelphia Little Flyers (EHL)) scored off another Ring assist to put the Cards up 4-1 heading into the third period.
In the third period, the Cardinals took advantage of an enormous amount of Purple Knight penalties, leading to nine power plays. The Cards took advantage, converting six of those into goals, as a variety of people played into the scoring act. Lanyi picked up the period's first score for his second goal of the game and Jirousek followed soon after with his second goal seven minutes into the period. Over the final seven minutes of the game, six Plattsburgh goals would find the net, with Bonfield scoring twice and
Ryan Butler (Kelowna, British Columbia/Islanders Hockey Club (NCDC)),
Tio D'Addario (Montreal, Quebec/Nava Grads (CCHL)),
Bennett Stockdale (Ottawa, Ontario/Alabama Huntsville (NCAA DI, WCHA), and
Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres (OJHL)) each scoring for Plattsburgh State. Over that time, Ring picked up two more assists, leading the Cardinals with four points on the day.
For the Purple Knights, Cole Manahan got the start in goal and made 30 saves, while Jackson Cole finished the night with 18 saves in 27 minutes. Forselius picked up the goal, while Ashton Allain and Quinn McCarthy added assists.
