Women's Soccer Plays to 3-3 Draw at Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team played to a 3-3 draw with the Buffalo State Bengals on the road Saturday in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. Despite a 25-9 shot advantage, the Bengals were still able to match the Cardinals scoring total, as Plattsburgh has now tied in two straight games.

Allison Brown (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham), Zoe Rice (Leicester, Mass./Leicester), and Catrina Maltes (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) each scored on Saturday, with Rice and Maltes notching their first scores of the season. Brown and Avery Durgan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) each added assists for the Cards. In goal, Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y./Arlington) made four saves as her season record moved to 4-3-5.

The Cardinal's record now stands at 4-4-5 (2-1-4 SUNYAC) on the year, as they have a big home matchup with Oneonta set for Wednesday, Oct. 18. The Red Dragons sit three points behind the Cardinals for one of the final playoff spots, meaning a win would put them ahead of the Cards in the standings. Buffalo State now moves to 5-5-4 (0-4-3 SUNYAC) as they find themselves eliminated from postseason contention in 2023. They next host Oswego State on Wednesday, Oct. 18 for home conference action.

In the first half, the first 25 minutes was all Cardinals, as they attempted six shots and two on goal, culminating in the game's first score from Brown in the 25th minute. However, in the 31st minute, the Bengals drew a penalty kick, as Hannah Esslie notched the conversion and score to knot the score up at one apiece, in what was the team's only shot in the entire period.

The 1-1 score remained into the break, and Plattsburgh once again found themselves with three looks at the net early, but Buffalo State had an offensive attack that did not resemble the first half, putting two shots on goal in the first two minutes of second-half action.

In the 53rd minute, Elle Bush connected with the back of the net, assisted by Emma Hesseltine, giving Buffalo State their first lead in any SUNYAC game this season. The lead held for over 20 minutes, until Rice collected her first goal of the season, bending in a corner kick to tie the game.

Not even two minutes after tying the game, the Cards found themselves with another great opportunity as Durgan found Brown for an excellent look at the net that was finished by Maltes just in front of the goal line, giving Plattsburgh a 3-2 lead.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Buffalo State turned around and scored just over 30 seconds later, once again putting the game in a tie. Over the final 11-plus minutes, each team put on a shot on goal, but could not score, as the Bengals had the final opportunity but were stymied by the Cardinal defense, solidifying the 3-3 draw.

Samantha Kaufman made eight saves in net, while Esslie had two goals, Bush had a score, and both Cam Mercurio and Hesseltine had assists.
