Men's Soccer Sustains First Loss of 2023, Falls to No. 11 Cortland

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer sustained their first loss of the 2023 season, falling to the No. 11 ranked Cortland Red Dragons 2-0 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. Plattsburgh played very competitively with the nationally ranked Red Dragons, outshooting them 13-12 and earning 11 corners over the 90-minute contest.

The Cardinals had a strong and consistent offensive attack over the course of the game, with Brian Coughlan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), John Hayes (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), and Connor Howe (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) each led the team with three shots, with Howe attempting two on goal for the team lead. Teddy Healy (Amityville, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) took his first loss of the season in goal, allowing two scores and making one save.

Plattsburgh State falls to 7-1-4 (2-1-3 SUNYAC) and will next celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 14 when they take on Buffalo State at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor six seniors: Kevin Abbondanza (Rye, N.Y./Rye), Jack Healy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), Frankie Palumbo (Walkill, N.Y./Walkill), Matthew Pitarresi (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell), Dylan Shalvey (Cavan, Ireland/Peekskill (N.Y.)), and Marcial Vasquez (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane). No. 11 Cortland improves to 11-2-1 (5-1 SUNYAC) and next plays Brockport in a SUNYAC tournament semifinal rematch on Saturday, Oct. 14.
The Red Dragons started the game action dominating possession and putting together some good chances, attempting a shot 22 seconds into the game. The team earned back-to-back corners in the sixth minute, culminating in the eventual game-winner from Mateo Marra, brother of sophomore midfielder Mariano Marra (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining).

After the first Cortland goal, play was very even between the two squads, as the Cardinals were able to put together some good looks offensively. Howe was able to put the best look for Plattsburgh on the net in the 41st minute, but the shot was saved by the Cortland keeper.

In the second half, the Cards continued a strong and relentless attack, controlling possession for the majority of the period. 27 seconds into the second half, Modou Badjie (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) had a great look at net saved, and Xavier Kamba (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack) also had an open look at the goal saved away in the 53rd minute.

The Red Dragons made the tall task of scoring once to tie the game even tougher in the 61st minute when Jairo Ulloa scored off a Mateo Marra corner kick to put Cortland up 2-0.

The Cards kept knocking on the door of a goal despite being down two scores, looking to find the equalizer but failed to capitalize off of their seven corners and their nine-shot attempts in the second stanza.
Jordan Ott recorded five saves for Cortland earning the shutout, while Marra had a goal and assist to lead the offense. Cade Denlinger also had an assist for the Red Dragons in the win.
