No. 11 Men's Ice Hockey Edges No. 7 Geneseo, 3-2, to Extend Winning Streak to Six

GENESEO, N.Y. – Junior forward Carson Gallagher (Courtice, Ontario/Sacred Heart University) scored the game-winning goal at 10:40 of the third period, as the No. 11 Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team posted a 3-2 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over No. 7 SUNY Geneseo on Saturday evening at the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena to remain atop the conference standings. With the victory, the Cardinals extended their winning streak to six.

Geneseo is ranked at No. 7 in the DCU/USCHO.com Men's Division III Top-15 Poll, while Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 11.

The Cardinals scored two goals in the first period, while the Knights scored twice in the second. Plattsburgh State finally broke the deadlock at 10:40 of the third. Gallagher took control of the puck along the back wall and passed back to senior defenseman Jacob Modry (Albany, N.Y./Merrimack College) on the right point. Modry then fired a one-time shot that Gallagher redirected into the goal from the slot.

With 1:54 left in regulation, Geneseo called a timeout before pulling its goalie in favor of the extra attacker. The Knights only mustered two shots down the stretch, one of which was saved by sophomore goaltender Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) and the other of which was blocked by senior forward Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres), and the Cardinals held on for the win.

Plattsburgh State rises to 15-4-2 overall (9-2-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits Fredonia on Friday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. Geneseo falls to 13-5-2 overall (7-3-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits Oswego State on Friday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m.

Tretowicz fired the opening salvo at 15:15 of the first period.  Junior defenseman Kevin Weaver-Vitale (Toronto, Ontario/Markham Royals) sent a stretch pass forward to junior forward Paul Bryer (Clarkston, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club), and Bryer fed Tretowicz with a short pass at the top of the left circle. Tretowicz then fired a shot that deflected off the goalie's glove and into the back of the net.

Sophomore forward Jake Lanyi (North Salem, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) made it a 2-0 game with 34.4 seconds left in the first period. Shortly after Lanyi was released from the penalty box, Lanyi forced a turnover at the red line and started a 2-on-0 rush into the Knights' zone. Lanyi then fired a shot from the right circle that beat the goalie high glove side.

Geneseo struck twice early in the second period to tie the game. Senior forward Bryan Zurowski put the Knights on the board at the 1:14 mark, as he deflected a shot by sophomore forward Peter Morgan into the back of the net. First-year defenseman Dakota Zarudny earned the secondary assist on the goal. At 3:27 of the second, first-year forward Cannon Green scored his first collegiate goal, receiving a stretch pass from senior forward Justin Cmunt before scoring on the backhand in front of the crease. Senior defenseman Alex Wilkins also earned an assist on the goal.

The Cardinals finished with a 26-24 edge in shots on goal, while the Knights were scoreless on two power-play opportunities. The Plattsburgh State power-play unit did not see any action during the game.

Hearne made 22 saves in the win for Plattsburgh State, while senior goaltender Matt Petizian steered aside 23 shots in the loss for Geneseo.
