OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team fell to the 17th-ranked Oswego State Lakers on Friday night 97-61, losing a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match. The Lakers high powered offense scored over 90 points for the third straight game, as they hit seven three-pointers in a 52-point first half.
Sheriff Conteh (Bronx, N.Y./Our Saviour Lutheran) led all Plattsburgh scorers with 13 points off the bench, working in a team-high 24 minutes. Kevin Tabb (Brooklyn, N.Y./Thomas Jefferson) added ten points for the Cards and Myles Jones (Alexandria, Va./Blue Ridge School) had eight points. Jeremiah Sparks had a game-high 27 points, shooting 10-14 from the floor to go along with five boards and four assists.
Plattsburgh shot the ball well from the floor on Friday night, shooting at a 45% clip, with 44 of their 61 points coming in the paint. Oswego's high percentage from the floor (51.3%) and deep (37.5%) was a big factor in their win, but their dominance on the boards, winning the rebounding battle 49-25, was the game's big difference. The Lakers turned in 19 second-chance points to the Card's seven and Oswego State also turned the Card's giveaways into 21 points.
The Cardinals fall to 7-11 and 3-8 in league play as they will take on Cortland tomorrow, Jan.28 at 4 p.m., in more SUNYAC action. The 17th-ranked Lakers move to 17-2 overall and 11-1 in SUNYAC play, extending their win streak to 13 games, as they will matchup with Potsdam tomorrow.
The Laker offense was hot from the outset of the game, as the Cardinals were able to keep pace through the first 15 minutes of action. A jumper by Tabb at the 6:47 mark pulled the Cards within three points of Oswego, but the Lakers then began to build their lead, closing the half on a 22-6 run to enter halftime with a 52-33 lead. Despite the Cardinal's 50% (16-32) shooting from the field, the Lakers were able to take the big lead despite shooting at a worse clip (46.5%, 20-43), thanks to more attempts and makes, and hot shooting from deep (50%, 7-14).
The second half was much of the same, as Plattsburgh was never closer than 21 points, with the Laker offense continuing their relentless attack. Despite only two threes, Oswego shot 57.5% from the floor to continue to separate themselves from the Cards, eventually coming to the 97-61 victory.
