PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – First-year goaltender
Eli Shiller (Toronto, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) posted a 26-save shutout and junior forward
Bennett Stockdale (Ottawa, Ontario/University of Alabama in Huntsville) scored twice, as the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team blanked Williams College, 2-0, in the non-conference finale for both teams on Saturday evening at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
The Cardinals' penalty kill was on point once again, killing off all three penalties they sustained, including a five-minute major. Plattsburgh State was scoreless on one chance with the extra attacker. The Ephs finished with a 26-21 edge in shots on goal.
Plattsburgh State rises to 11-4-2 overall with the win and next hosts rival Oswego State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on Friday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. Williams falls to 4-9-1 overall with the loss and next visits Bowdoin College on Friday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m.
Stockdale broke the ice at 16:28 of the second period. Senior defenseman
Ryan Hogg (Duncan, British Columbia/Islanders Hockey Club) sent a stretch pass ahead to junior forward
Paul Bryer (Clarkston, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club) along the right boards, and Bryer hit junior forward
Carson Gallagher (Courtice, Ontario/Sacred Heart University) with a short pass. Gallagher then tapped the puck to Stockdale, who scored through the five-hole on the backhand.
Plattsburgh State continued to prevent Williams from getting high-quality scoring opportunities throughout the third period, and Stockdale added much-needed insurance to the Cardinals' cause with an empty-net goal with 56.7 seconds left in regulation. Senior defenseman
Jacob Modry (Albany, N.Y./Merrimack College) flipped a pass high into the neutral zone, and Bryer won a 50-50 battle for the puck. Bryer poked the puck over to Stockdale in the left circle, and Stockdale used smooth stickhandling to elude an Eph defender and score into the empty net.
In addition to Stockdale, Bryer had a two-point night, providing an assist on each of Stockdale's goals.
Williams' sophomore goaltender Cal Sandquist made 19 saves in the loss.
