PLATTSBURGH, NY - Plattsburgh State men's soccer picked up their second win in 24 hours on Saturday afternoon, winning 2-0 over DeSales University on the Cardinal's home turf.
Brian Coughlan (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) and
Rocky Bujaj (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) each sank deep shots from the top of the box to give the Cards their two scores on the day.
Plattsburgh moves to 2-0 on the season, having won back-to-back days by scores of 2-0. DeSales falls to 0-2, as the Bulldogs lost two games on their trip from PA to the North Country, falling to Clarkson 1-0 and Plattsburgh 2-0.
The Cardinals didn't take long once again to score, as they scored within the first 10 minutes for the second straight game. In the 3rd minute of action,
Andrew Braverman (Sayville,NY/Sayville) had a pass to
John Hayes (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) redirct to Coughlan at the top of the box. The sophomore was able to gain control of the pass just outside the top of the box and dribbled past a fallen defender, the sophomore ripped a shot into the upper left corner of the net, past the outstretched arm of the Bulldog goalie to put the Cards up 1-0.
Plattsburgh added to their lead when
Frankie Palumbo (Walkill, NY/Walkill) placed a pass to Bujaj on the right side of the field. Bujaj then took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity, dribbling around his defender and past the help to rip a shot off his left foot, once again the shot went into the upper left corner of the net for the goal. The shot gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the 42nd minute, just before the halftime horn sounded. The goal was the first of Bujaj's career at Plattsburgh State, connecting on only the third shot in his career as a Cardinal.
The second half was played in more balanced terms as only six total shots were taken, with Plattsburgh earning a 4-2 advantage. Only three corner kicks occurred as well, as both teams' defenses were doing well to stop attacks at the goal. The even play allowed the Cards to cruise along to their second win of 2022.
Teddy Healy (Amityville, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) picked his second win and shutout of the season, also adding two saves. He has helped lead the Cardinals on a seven-game win streak dating back to last season, with five of those wins being shutouts with Healy in goal.
The Cards will return to play on Wednesday, Sept. 7, as the team will welcome Castleton to the Field House Complex Turf at 7 pm.
