PLATTSBURGH, NY - The Plattsburgh State men's soccer dropped a SUNYAC contest to SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday evening, falling to the Hawks 1-0 in full time. The Cardinals played strong defensively, holding the Hawks to one goal over 90 minutes, but could not find the net for the first time this season.
The Cards move to 4-2-1 (0-1-1) with the loss, while New Paltz picks up three points in the SUNYAC standings with the win, moving to 4-2-2 (1-0-0).
Plattsburgh State and New Paltz saw little action through the first 30-plus minutes, as both teams worked to maintain possession and control the ball. The Cardinals had a strong chance to score in the 22nd minute, as a
Juan Velez (Cuenca, Ecuador/Peekskill (NY)) shot was saved, and the rebound and shot attempt by
Brian Coughlan (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) was blocked and picked up by the New Paltz keeper.
The Hawks got on the board for the game's lone goal in the 38th minute when Philip Varner was able to head a shot home.
In the second half,
Teddy Healy (Amityville, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) did his best to keep his team in the game, making some great saves, as he had four in the second half alone and six overall.
As time ran down, the Cardinals were able to register two shots in the final seven minutes, but neither could make its way past the Hawks' goalie, giving the Cards their first loss of the SUNYAC campaign.
Healy's record in goal dropped to 4-2-1 with his six saves, allowing just the one score on the seven shots he saw on goal.
Plattsburgh will head to Geneseo for a long trip west this weekend as they will take on the Knights at 1 p.m. The Cardinals have won five straight decisions against Geneseo, dating back to 2016.
