Frary Earns First Victory as Head Coach of Women's Soccer

PLATTSBURGH, NY - Whitney Frary picked up her first win as the head coach of Plattsburgh women's soccer on Thursday night, as her team defeated Castleton 2-0 in Vermont. The returning SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Year Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, NY/Beekmantown) wasted no time picking up right where she left off in 2021, scoring one goal and assisting on one as well. Allison Seidman (Commack, NY/Commack) picked up the other goal for the Cardinals, as she scored the first goal of the season for Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh State came out of the gate aggressively, attempting a shot in the first three minutes and earning two corners within the first 10. After the Spartans got off a few shots of their own, the Cardinals gained control and took their chance down the field. A loose ball allowed Villemaire to shake her defender on the right side and find some open field. The graduate student slotted a perfect pass into the box, and Seidman put the ball in with a strong run down the middle of the field, putting Plattsburgh up 1-0.

The second half also saw the Cardinals come out very aggressively scoring in the 52nd minute, just over seven minutes into the second half. Villemaire was the one to once again the one to take control of a loose ball, working ahead of her defender to rip a shot from nearly 10 yards outside of the box, slotting in her first goal of the season and the 29th of her career. The goal tied her for sixth all-time in Plattsburgh history, as she continues to move her way up in the record books.

The Cardinals were able to outshoot the Spartans 9-7 on the day and earned four corner kicks to Castleton's two. Only two of Plattsburgh's shots were on target, but the Cards made them count, as both found the back of the net.

Julia Ennis (Carmel, NY/Kennedy Catholic) picked up her first win of 2022, saving five shots in her 90 minutes of work.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 3 at home, taking on Russell Sage at 12 p.m.
