PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State Men's Soccer team will begin their 2022 campaign when they open their season at home on Friday, September 2 against Keene State.

The team is coming off an 8-7-1 season led by now fifth-year head coach Chris Taylor, finishing 4-4-1 in conference play and narrowly missing the SUNYAC playoffs, as they tied with Oswego who also had a 4-4-1 record but earned the final playoff spot over the Cardinals. Plattsburgh finished the season on a five-game win streak and will look to ride that strong finish to last season into 2022.

"We are excited about this year's group. We have a nice blend of experience and exciting newcomers, and we look forward to seeing how they all come together throughout the season. We have a number of players that gained valuable experience last season as freshmen and sophomores and we are looking for them to make the next step forward in their development," Coach Taylor said, "The players showed they have the right attitude with their fitness levels for pre-season, and we hope to build a foundation from that. We have an intense schedule and the league is always a gauntlet, so we will have to be at our best every day to be successful."

The group will look to return to the SUNYAC tournament in the upcoming season, after snapping a streak of five straight seasons qualifying for postseason play, and will look to clinch their ninth SUNYAC title in program history.

Forwards

The forward group returns three upperclassmen to their group this year while adding three first-year to the forwards. Seniors Alex Graci (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park), who appeared in 13 games last year, and Noel Vidal (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) have the most experience among the group and are joined by junior Frankie Palumbo (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill) as the three returners.

Three first-years fill out the rest of the forwards as Tony Kochelev (Staten Island, NY/Curtis), Mariano Marra (Ossining, NY/Ossining), and Justin Siegel (Plainview, NY/Plainview-Old Bethpage) will look to add some firepower to the Cardinal attack.

Midfielders

A deep group of midfielders returns to Plattsburgh in 2022, as the top two goal scorers in 2021 lead the experienced group. Sophomore Brian Coughlan (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River), who led the team with six goals and 16 points last year, will form a strong group with Dylan Shalvey (Covan, Ireland/Tappan Zee(NY)) and Juan Velez (Cuenca, Ecuador/Peekskill(NY)).

Kevin Abbondanza (Rye, NY/Rye), Rocky Bujaj (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown), Trey Ekert (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River), Christian Garner (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury), and Cole Weiner (Saint James, NY/Smithtown) bring plenty of game experience, as well as time with the program to help bring great depth to the midfield group.

Sophomore Nathan Baker (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Dobbs Ferry), Colter Cheney-Seymour (Saranac Lake, NY/Northwood School), and Danny Perry (Shirley, NY/Longwood) round out the strong group for Coach Taylor.

Defenders

Plattsburgh's lone returning all-conference player John Hayes (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) leads another experienced group of players for Coach Taylor. Hayes was an All-SUNYAC third-team selection and has Andrew Braverman (Sayville, NY/Sayville) and Jack Healy (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) returning to play beside him this year. Braverman, Hayes, and Healy were tops on the team in minutes played last year, trailing only goalkeeper Teddy Healy

Also returning in 2022 for a graduate year is Joseph Ditillo (Mastic, NY/William Floyd), who played in 12 games last season. He will have plenty of experience beside him with senior Jimmy Alexander (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), transfer junior Oscar Mirkovic (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), junior Matthew Pitarresi (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell), and sophomore Owen Husselbeck (Huntington, NY/Huntington).

Goalkeepers

Teddy Healy (Amityville, NY/Kellenberg Memorial), who finished the year with back-to-back SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, returns to man the goalie position for Plattsburgh in 2022, amassing 48 saves in 16 games last year.

The group also includes senior Ethan Gaboff (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall), first-year Aiden Jaremczuk (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union), and Marcial Vasquez (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane).
