Baseball Drops 10-0 SUNYAC Decision to Brockport

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team fell to SUNY Brockport, 10-0, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday afternoon at Chip Cummings Field.

The Golden Eagles scattered 11 hits in the victory and took advantage of four Cardinal miscues; just two of Brockport's 10 runs were earned.

Senior shortstop Christian Lent (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) paced the Cardinal bats, going 2-for-3. The Golden Eagles had four players with multi-hit games, led by senior left fielder Ryan Mansell's 3-for-4 outing that included two RBI and one run scored.

Senior pitcher Peter Gregory (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) sustained the loss despite yielding four unearned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three. Senior pitcher Andrew Huffman earned the win for Brockport, throwing seven shutout innings while striking out seven.

Plattsburgh State falls to 20-16 overall (6-10 SUNYAC) with the loss, while Brockport rises to 30-6 overall (12-4 SUNYAC) with the win. The two teams close out the regular season tomorrow with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Senior Day. In between the games, the Cardinals will honor their 11 seniors: Aaron Roman (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial), Nolan De Melfi (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd), Lucas Rodriguez (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown), Gregory, Pierce Steinberg (Mahopac, N.Y./The Harvey School), Lent, Dylan Reilly (Lawrence, N.Y./Holy Trinity Diocesan), Ryan Lawyer (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie Central), Steve Messerschmitt (Fishkill, N.Y./Carmel), Jacob Hutton (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) and Sean Malamud (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner).

Brockport got on the board in the top of the third when senior second baseman James Houlahan hit an RBI single to center field. The Golden Eagles swelled the advantage to 4-0 with a three-run fourth. Graduate student catcher Jake Sisto scored on a fielding error following a single by senior third baseman Matt O'Dair, while Houlahan plated O'Dair with a single down the right-field line and Mansell pushed across senior shortstop Justin Pangburn with a single to center field.

The Golden Eagles added six runs of insurance in the fifth. Pangburn hit a two-run double and Mansell drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch before senior center fielder Nicholas Pastore cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right field.

From that point forward, sophomore pitcher Logan Avin (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and junior pitcher Gabe Mounkhall (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack) kept the Golden Eagles from doing any further damage, holding Brockport without a hit the rest of the way.
