Women's Lacrosse Falls to Oswego, 17-6, in Season Finale

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team wrapped up the 2022 season on Saturday with a 17-6 loss to Oswego State in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday at Laker Turf Stadium.
 
Junior defender/midfielder Emma McLaughlin (Northport, N.Y./Northport) took over the career record in ground balls with 56 and finished the season with a single-season record 29 caused turnovers and a career record 44 caused turnovers. Senior attacker Emily Caoili (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) finishes her career as the program's all-time leader in goals (58), assists (37) and points (95) in addition to compiling single-season program marks in assists (16) and points (37). In goal, junior goalie Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) set single-season and career program records in save percentage (.431), while senior goalie Alexa Cassidy (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) concludes her career as the program's all-time leader in saves (198).
 
The Lakers finished with the upper hand in shots (32-20), draw controls (17-10) and ground balls (30-28). The Cardinals went 15-for-22 on clears, while Oswego was 14-for-16.
 
Plattsburgh State finishes its season at 5-9 overall (3-6 SUNYAC) with the loss. The Cardinals' five wins are the most in a single season in the four-year history of the program. Oswego rises to 6-10 overall (5-4 SUNYAC) with the win and earned the No. 5 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament. The Lakers visit fourth-seeded SUNY Oneonta in the first round on Tuesday, May 3.
 
Oswego jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter, while junior midfielder Lindsay Guzzetta (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) put the Cardinals on the board with 33 seconds left in the opening stanza courtesy of a feed from sophomore midfielder Jordan Kowalski (Westfield, Mass./Westfield). The Lakers' sophomore attacker Isabella Lembo scored on a feed from sophomore defender Julia Quirk with 15 seconds remaining to extend Oswego's advantage to 6-1 through 15 minutes of play.
 
The Lakers scored the first two goals of the second quarter before junior midfielder Caroline Noia (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) tallied on a free-position shot. Oswego closed the first half with four unanswered goals, the last of which from senior attacker Logan Castiglione with 2:38 remaining in the second quarter, a woman-up marker, pinned the Lakers to a 12-2 advantage.
 
After Oswego's junior attacker Madison Davis put the Lakers up 13-2 3:15 into the third, Guzzetta and junior attacker/midfielder Kate Kennedy (Waddington, N.Y./Massena) each scored on free-positino shots woman-up to trim the gap to 13-4. Lembo netted a woman-up goal on a feed from junior midfielder Sela Wiley to extend the lead back out to 10 through three quarters of action.
 
Wiley tallied woman-up on a free-position attempt 1:12 into the fourth quarter before Kennedy responded nearly three minutes later. Oswego wound up burying two more goals before senior midfielder Davina Gyedu (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) closed scoring in the contest with 1:35 left.
 
Guzzetta and Kennedy each scored two goals, while Kowalski controlled four draws and collected six ground balls.
 
For Oswego, Castiglione led the way with 10 points on two goals and eight assists, while Lembo netted seven markers. Wiley stuffed the stat sheet with 12 ground balls, seven draw controls and three caused turnovers.
 
Nease and sophomore goalie Johanna Malone (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) combined for five saves for the Cardinals, while first-year goalie Sarah Kamide turned aside four shots in between the posts for the Lakers.

Saturday's game marked the end of the collegiate career for the Cardinals' four seniors: Caoili, Gyedu, Cassidy and attacker Allie Vangas (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall).
