PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team closed out the 2022 season with a 14-10 win over SUNY New Paltz on Senior Day Saturday at the Field House Complex.
Prior to the start of the game, the Cardinals honored their 14 seniors, who all played in their final game wearing a Plattsburgh State uniform: attackman
Connor Wolff (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna), midfielders
Zach Gill (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point),
Matt Trypaluk (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point),
Andrew Braverman (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville),
Billy Lombardi (East Atlantic Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and
Stephen Kane (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional); short-stick defensive midfielders
Tanner Tobias (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and
Pete Mullen (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial); face-off specialists
Brendan Heggers (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) and

Max Burgio (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna),
Justin Rocovich (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) and
James Schulze (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Croton-Harmon); and goalie
Christian Bassi (Windham, N.H./Kimball Union Academy).
Kane wrapped up his career with 123 points on 99 goals and 24 assists. His 93 goals rank seventh in program history, while his 123 points are the eighth most in the program's record book. In addition, Kane's 45 goals are the 10th most in a single season in program history. Bassi, meanwhile, concludes his career with 370 saves, the fourth most in the program's record book—particularly impressive given the abbreviated 2020 and 2021 seasons in which Bassi had served as the primary starting goalie. His 210 saves in 2022 are the third most in a single season in program history.
Plattsburgh State finishes its season at 4-12 (1-6 SUNYAC), while New Paltz closes out its campaign at 3-11 overall (1-6 SUNYAC).
Gill fired the opening salvo 4:05 into the contest, burying a man-up strike off a feed from Kane. New Paltz countered with three straight goals, however, with junior attackman Nate Biblowitz scoring man-up (junior midfielder Aidan Gregory assist), junior attackman Thomas Armetta tallying on a pass from first-year midfielder Anthony Senecal and Senecal finding the back of the net on an assist from sophomore defenseman Zachary Leung. The Hawks held a 3-1 advantage through 15 minutes of play.
Three goals in a span of less than two minutes helped Plattsburgh State regain the lead. Sophomore attackman
John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) tallied on a Trypaluk feed, while junior midfielder
Owen Lorenzetti (Seneca Falls, N.Y./Mynderse Academy) and Kane each scored unassisted. While Senecal's unassisted goal tied the game at 4-all, the Cardinals went on a three-goal surge to close out the first half. Kane scored a pair of goals, the first of which was assisted by Lorenzetti, while Kane fed Lorenzetti for a marker with seven seconds remaining in the second quarter to put the home team on top, 7-4.
New Paltz buried the first goal of the third quarter, with first-year midfielder/attackman James Flanagan cashing in on a pass from sophomore attackman John Reese 2:48 into the period. Trypaluk converted on a pass from first-year attackman
Donald Woods (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) less than a minute later before Eiseman scored on an assist from Gill midway through the period. Flanagan netted a man-up goal on a pass from Gregory before Swift and Lorenzetti each scored unassisted for Plattsburgh State to swell the lead to 11-6 through three quarters of play.
Senecal scored for New Paltz 31 seconds into the fourth, while Kane answered back nearly three minutes later. Flanagan fired in a feed from Armetta midway through the fourth before Woods and Swift (Gill assist) each scored for the Cardinals to extend the margin to 14-8. The Hawks scored the final two goals of the game, with Flanagan scoring unassisted and Armetta burying a pass from first-year midfielder Ethan Scully.
The Cardinals owned a 50-41 advantage in shots, while the Hawks had the upper hand in ground balls (31-30) and went 15-for-28 at the 'X.' On clears, Plattsburgh State was 19-for-26, while New Paltz was 18-for-27. The Cardinals scored on their lone extra-man opportunity, while the Hawks were 2-for-4.
