Plattsburgh, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State Softball fell in both games of their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, losing 9-1 in six innings in game one and losing 6-4 in game two to Oneonta.
The offense could only muster three hits in game one, while the bats got going in game two as
Julia Golino (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) led the team with three hits in the second game of the day.
Game One: Oneonta 9, Plattsburgh 1
A four-run third inning and three-run sixth allowed the Red Dragons to pull away and put into effect an eight-run mercy rule after six innings. The Red Dragons had a strong offensive showing with four extra base hits, with Julia Serena collecting four hits and five RBIs in the days opening game.
For Plattsburgh State, they had their best chance to get back into the game in the bottom of the fifth trailing by six. After
Rebecca Diller (Halfmoon, NY/Shenendehowa) reached on an error and
Sam Gentile (Highland, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) bunted her way on base,
Dimitra Mouhteros (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.
Kelsy Waite (Winthrop, NY/St. Lawrence Central) was called upon to pinch hit and grounded into a fielder's choice, which allowed Diller to score from third. The Cardinals would leave the bases loaded however, as the next two batters were retired, allowing the Red Dragons to eventually employ the mercy rule in the following inning.
Gentile,
Alexa Murray (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue), and
Kristen Langdon (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) recorded the three hits for the Cardinal offense.
Game Two: Oneonta 6, Plattsburgh 4
After a three-run top half of the first from Oneonta in game two, the Plattsburgh offense got the bats going with two runs to respond. Gentile was able to draw a bases as loaded walk to bring in the first run and an error from the Red Dragon shortstop allowed another Cardinal run to score, bringing the deficit to one run.
After Oneonta extended their lead to 5-2, Plattsburgh was able to slowly trim the deficit, with pinch-runner
Kaitlin Smith (New Windsor, NY/Washingtonville) scoring on a wild pitch in the fifth and with one more run in the bottom of the sixth. In the sixth, back-to-back two-out walks put the tying on base, and Golino drove the lead runner home with a single to right field. The Red Dragon pitcher was able to strand the tying run and go ahead run on base, however, and the offense added an important insurance run heading into the bottom of the seventh.
In their final at bat, an Oneonta error allowed the tying run to bat three times, but three stragiht outs ended the game, handing the Red Dragons a win as they moved to 13-5 (4-0) while Plattsburgh fell to 5-9 (2-2).
Golino drove in a run for the Cardinals while also picking up three hits, a walk, and two runs scored. Langdon, Murray, and
Dolly Garguilo (Monroe, NY/ Washingtonville) each had a hit for Plattsburgh in the loss.
Kristina Maggiacomo (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) took the loss on the mound, thorwing a complete game while surrendering just four earned runs while striking out five batters.
The team will travel to St. Lawrence for a doubleheader on Tuesday April 5th before hosting Brockport and Geneseo this weekend.
