Plattsburgh , N.Y. -
Julia Golino (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) and
Kristina Maggiacomo (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) each twirled gems for the Plattsburgh State Softball (1-14, 6-6) team as neither allowed an earned run in the two victories. Golino nearly had the ninth no-hitter in program history, but Potsdam (0-25, 0-12) recorded their first hit of the game in the top of the seventh with one out.
The team had timely hitting throughout the day amassing 15 hits and 11 runs over the two games. After the two SUNYAC victories,
Gabrielle Rodriguez (Albany, NY/Albany),
Alexa Murray (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue), and
Alex McKearin (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) were each honored and celebrated on senior day for their careers with Plattsburgh State Softball.
Game One: Plattsburgh State 4, Potsdam 0
Golino was the story in game one as she nearly produced the ninth no-hitter in program history, allowing just one hit in the seventh inning with two outs to go. Overall, she threw seven innings for the win and complete game, striking out six in the process and allowing just one walk and the one hit. She earned her fourth win of the year with the effort and sixth complete game of the season. She is now sporting a pristine 2.93 ERA over 10 games pitched and 55 innings of work.
Offensively, Murray and
Kristen Langdon (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) both had multi hit games, with the pair each scoring a run and Langdon driving in a run. The team scored their runs in consecutive innings, with a run in the third and fourth and with two runs in the fifth.
Three triples helped to power offense in Saturday afternoons first game, as McKearin connected on the first triple, smoking a pitch deep into the right field gap for her first extra-base hit of the season in the third. Rodriguez followed with an RBI groundout to put the Cardinals on the board and to give the team a one run lead. Langdon started another rally in the fourth with a leadoff triple, as the ball hit the fence, inches away from the junior's first collegiate homerun. After a pair of walks loaded the bases,
Danielle Torres (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) hit a sharp ground ball to second that was stopped but a weak throw home allowed a run to score and everyone was safe, extending the Plattsburgh lead to 2-0.
The team added two more runs in the fifth as
Claire Palmer (Suffern, NY/Suffern) hit a perfectly placed ball down the left field line for an RBI triple and Langdon followed with a single up the middle to bring her home. With the score at 4-0, the deficit was more than enough for Golino as she continued to cruise through her day in the circle.
Game Two: Plattsburgh State 7, Potsdam 1
Maggiacomo followed up Golino's gem with a gem of her own, notching her team leading fifth win and 10th complete game with her effort in the circle on Saturday. The junior threw seven innings allowing just four hits, an unearned run, two walks, while striking out three batters. Perhaps as equally impressive, Maggiacomo was 3-3 at the plate, driving in two runs with a two-run double off the left-field fence in the first.
The Plattsburgh offense came out right away with run support in game two of the SUNYAC doubleheader on Saturday, as Murray reached on an error in the first, advanced to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a ground ball, and scored on a wild pitch in the next at bat. A walk from Langdon and a single from Golino set the stage for Maggiacomo's two-run double, as the junior drove a pitch deep down the left field line and off the wall, scoring both Cardinal base runners. Palmer added a run for the Cards in the second inning as she smoked a one out double to left-center, moved to third on a groundout, and also scored on a wild pitch.
The next couple of innings turned into a pitcher's duel, as Maggiacomo was dealing and Sierra Ashley of Potsdam put up consecutive zeroes on the scoreboard. The Bears got on the board in the fourth when Vanessa Brandt doubled to right-center and was likely dead in the water as she turned to third, but an errant throw went out of play, giving Brandt third base and allowing her to score.
With just a three-run lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, the lead was far from safe, so the offense went to work. With two outs, Murray singled up the middle and Palmer drew a walk to set the stage for Langdon. After just missing a homerun in game one, Langdon left no doubt as the junior crushed a ball to right-center field, clearing the fence and putting the game on ice. Maggiacomo followed with a 1-2-3 seventh, sending Plattsburgh home with their second victory of the day.
Plattsburgh State will head to Oswego on Monday for a doubleheader at 10 am and 12 pm in Oswego, as they still have six games left on their SUNYAC schedule and will look to jockey for position in the SUNYAC playoffs.
