Bassi Makes 26 Saves in Men's Lacrosse's 12-4 Setback to Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. – Senior goalie Christian Bassi (Windham, N.H./Kimball Union Academy) made the second-most saves in a single game in program history, but the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team fell to SUNY Geneseo, 12-4, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday afternoon at College Stadium.

Bassi turned aside 26 shots, tying him with Christian Lewis' 26 saves on March 14, 1999 against The City College of New York for the second most in a single game in program history. He was just one save shy of the program record of 27, which Lewis achieved on April 25, 1999 against Southern New Hampshire University.

The Knights finished with a 60-25 edge in shots and a 31-12 margin in ground balls while going 16-for-18 at the 'X.' On clears, Plattsburgh State went 20-for-24, while Geneseo went 12-for-13. The Cardinals scored one goal on five extra-man opportunities, while the Knights were scoreless on six extra-man chances.

Plattsburgh State falls to 3-11 overall (0-5 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday, April 27, at 7 p.m. Geneseo rises to 7-6 overall (5-0 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits SUNY Brockport on Tuesday, April 26, at 4 p.m.

Geneseo scored the first eight goals of the game, all of which came in the first half. Junior midfielder Gustav Rugg (Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) put the Cardinals on the board 3:28 into the third quarter before Geneseo received a goal from senior attackman Kevin Cook (junior midfielder Liam Kassl assist) with 3:26 to go in the third to lead, 9-1, through 45 minutes of play.

In the fourth quarter, senior midfielder Stephen Kane (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) scored a man-up goal on a pass from sophomore attackman John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) before junior midfielder Owen Lorenzetti (Seneca Falls, N.Y./Mynderse Academy) tallied on a feed from Kane less than a minute later. While the Knights scored three unanswered goals, Rugg found the back of the net on a pass from Lorenzetti with 4:30 left in regulation to close out scoring in the contest.

Kane and Lorenzetti each had two points on a goal and an assist, while Bassi scooped up three ground balls.

Cook led Geneseo with four points on two goals and two assists, while senior midfielder Sean Byrne scored three times. Defensively, sophomore defenseman Trevor Bollinger caused three turnovers and collected three ground balls, while senior face-off specialist Ryan Lee went 14-for-16 on face-offs.

In goal for Geneseo, junior goalie Mark Pav made 12 saves against four goals allowed.
