Oneonta, N.Y. - After heading into halftime knotted up at six goals apiece, the Hartwick College Hawks (3-2) pulled away from Plattsburgh State (2-4), outscoring the team 11-3 in the second half to come away with a win. The Hawks outscored the Cardinals 9-1 in the third quarter, outshooting Plattsburgh 24-3 in the quarter.
After an evenly played first half in almost every aspect, Hartwick come out with a strong game plan in the second half. The Hawks dominated the face off circle, finishing with a 13-2 advantage in the second stanza, allowing the team to control the game and keep possession throughout.
Plattsburgh State lead by as many as two goals with 1:40 left as
Stephen Kane (Hampden, MA/Minnechaug Regional) scored to give the Cards a 6-4 lead. The Hawks responded with a goal with 24 and six seconds left in the period to tie the score, and take the momentum into halftime.
Kane lead the team with five goals on the afternoon, also adding an assist to his line for six points in the loss.
Gustav Rugg (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) had two goals while
Owen Lorenzetti (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) and
Matt Trypaluk (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) each had a goal. Lorenezetti added an assist and two ground balls, and
Zach Gill (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) had three assists and two ground balls for the Cardinals.
Jack Brien (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester) picked up five loose balls for the Cards and
Christian Bassi (Windham, NH/Kimball Union Academy) made a season-high 19 saves in the loss.
The team continues their three-game road trip on Wednesday, March 23 with a venture to Clarkson Univesity for a game at 4 pm. The team then opens up conference play next Saturday, March 26 at SUNY Cortland at 3:30 pm.
