OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team completed a season sweep of Oswego State on Saturday afternoon at Max Ziel Gymnasium, topping the Lakers by a 60-53 final in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.
The Cardinals also defeated the Lakers on Jan. 14, as they prevailed by a 73-43 final at Memorial Hall.
Plattsburgh State shot 32.3 percent (21-of-65) from the floor and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the line while limiting Oswego to 29.7 percent (19-of-64) shooting from the field and 19.4 percent (6-of-31) shooting from 3-point range. The Lakers finished with a 53-42 edge in rebounds.
Junior guard
Mya Smith (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) scored a team-high 16 points, while first-year guard
Hope Sullivan (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) drained 15 points in 30 minutes coming off the bench. First-year forward
Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y./Saranac) netted 11 points, while senior guard
Kayla Doody (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds.
For Oswego, senior guard Danielle Caivana netted 22 points, while first-year guard Shania Iglesias poured in 14. First-year forward Diamond Pickett and first-year guard/forward Elaina Johnson grabbed 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
Plattsburgh State rises to 6-14 overall (3-10 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 5:30 p.m. Oswego falls to 4-15 overall (1-12 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits Buffalo State on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 5:30 p.m.
The two teams traded points in the early going of the first quarter until the Lakers scored four unanswered points to take a six-point lead. Junior forward
Hannah Ruberto (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) stopped the run with a layup, while senior forward
Kelly Degnan (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) converted on an old-fashioned 3-point play with 34 seconds left in the opening stanza to cut the gap to 12-11.
While Degnan and Smith each scored the first two field goals of the second quarter, Oswego netted five straight points to seize a 17-15 advantage. Plattsburgh State then went on a 7-0 surge, and a Smith layup put the Cardinals on top, 22-17. The momentum changed hands several times down the stretch in the second quarter, and the Cardinals entered the halftime intermission with a 24-21 cushion.
Oswego ended up leading by as many as three points midway through the third quarter, but the Cardinals fought back, tying the score on three occasions before a Smith layup handed Plattsburgh State a 37-35 edge heading into the final regulation frame.
The Lakers held the upper hand in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, and a 3-pointer by Caivana staked Oswego to a 47-43 lead. Plattsburgh State responded with a 13-0 run, and Smith drilled a 3-pointer with 58 seconds to go to put the Cardinals up, 55-47. Plattsburgh State made its free throws during the ensuing possessions to put the game on ice.
