PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore forward
Joey Mancuso (Pottstown, Pa./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) sealed his second hat trick of the season with a goal that crossed the goal line right before time expired in the third period, as the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team's offense clicked on all cylinders in a 13-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over Fredonia on Saturday evening at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
It marked the most goals the Cardinals scored in a game since Jan. 7, 2000; on that date, Plattsburgh State downed the Wentworth Institute of Technology by the identical score of 13-1 to open up the Cardinal Winter Classic.
Beyond Mancuso, who also recorded an assist, Plattsburgh State received five points from first-year forward
Jake Lanyi (North Salem, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) on two goals and three assists, four points from sophomore forward
Trey Thomas (Williams Lake, British Columbia/Brooks Bandits) on two goals and two assists and three points from sophomore forward
Bennett Stockdale (Ottawa, Ontario/Alabama Huntsville) on a goal and two assists. Senior forward
Christian DiFelice (Thorold, Ontario/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and junior forward
Mitchell Hale (Oakfield, N.Y./Johnstown Tomahawks) each notched two points on a goal and an assist, while sophomore forward
Paul Bryer (Clarkston, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club) and sophomore forward
Carson Gallagher (Courtice, Ontario/Sacred Heart University) each were credited with two assists.
Plattsburgh State scored on three of its four power-play opportunities, while Fredonia was scoreless in two chances with the extra skater. The Cardinals finished with a 58-24 edge in shots on goal.
Plattsburgh State, which has now won three straight games, moves to 13-7-3 overall (9-4-1 SUNYAC) and next visits SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. Fredonia falls to 7-9-1 overall (5-7-0 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits SUNY Geneseo on Friday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m.
Mancuso scored the first two goals of the game, tallying at 1:15 and 7:58 of the first period, respectively. DiFelice assisted on his first goal, while Bryer dished out an assist on his second. Lanyi banged in a feed from sophomore forward
Thomas Maia (Mississauga, Ontario/Nanaimo Clippers) at 8:56 of the first before Thomas netted a goal at 11:08 of the first period that was assisted by Gallagher and Stockdale.
Fredonia scored its lone goal of the game at 14:00 of the first period, as sophomore forward Parker Brakebill one-timed a shot into the back of the net from sophomore forward Andrew Keith. Sophomore forward Jake Blackwell also was credited with an assist on the play. Stockdale countered at 16:40 of the first with a goal on a Thomas assist, which gave the Cardinals a 5-1 lead they would carry into the first intermission.
Junior forward
Brendan Young (Lefroy, Ontario/Blind River Beavers) scored his first goal of the season at 13:54 of the second period, scoring on quick passes from Gallagher and junior defenseman
Ryan Hogg (Duncan, British Columbia/Islanders Hockey Club). Thomas netted his second goal of the game on the power play with just 34 seconds left in the second period, with Mancuso and junior defenseman
Jacob Modry (Albany, N.Y./Merrimack College) helping set up the score. That gave Plattsburgh State a 7-1 advantage through two periods of action.
The Cardinals exploded for six goals in the third period, which began with DiFelice scoring on passes from Stockdale and Bryer at 5:39 of the third. Hale scored on the power play at 8:15 of the third on feeds from Lanyi and sophomore defenseman
Kevin Weaver-Vitale (Toronto, Ontario/Markham Royals), while Lanyi netted a power-play marker at 12:04 of the third on assists from Hale and sophomore defenseman
Cory Doney (Northfield Falls, Vt./Vermont Lumberjacks).
First-year defenseman
Jack Ring (Hingham, Mass./Northeast Generals) entered the scoring column at 15:54 of the third thanks in part to a Lanyi pass, while junior forward
Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored unassisted just 20 seconds later. Mancuso completed the hat trick with a goal that officially came at 19:59 of the third, as Lanyi and Thomas set up the opportunity with passes in the neutral zone.
First-year goaltender
Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) made 23 saves in the winning effort for Plattsburgh State, while Fredonia utilized three different goaltenders in the loss. Junior goaltender Dalton Jerzak saw the bulk of the action for the Blue Devils, making 34 saves against eight goals allowed in 39:31.
