Second Half Run Leads Cortland to SUNYAC Win Over Women's Basketball

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y - After an Izzy Wilbur (Red Creek, N.Y./Red Creek) three-pointer made the score 37-34 Plattsburgh with 5:19 left in the third quarter, the Cardinals were stymied by Cortland, as the Red Dragons finished the game on a 36-2 run to win 70-39 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The three by Wilbur capped a 14-0 run for Plattsburgh, dating back to the first half, as they battled back to take the lead but could not find their offense down the stretch.

Wilbur had a team and career-high 13 points, to go along with five steals which were also a season-best for her. Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y./ Saranac) was also in double-figures for the Cards, posting 12 points to go along with seven boards and two steals. Nyia Longford and Fiona Mullen each had a game-high 14 points, with Longford adding seven boards and Mullen's 14 coming off the bench.

The Cards struggled to make shots from the field, managing just 10 field goals on 52 attempts (19.2%) but were able to connect on six of their 18 three-point attempts (33.3%). Plattsburgh kept in the game late into the third thanks to a large number of free throw attempts, in which they knocked down 13 of 23 (56.5%). Cortland shot a better percentage from the field, registering a 34.6% clip from the field and 32.3% from distance but only attempted 10 free throws on the afternoon. The Red Dragons proved to be a potent force in the interior pulling down 61 boards to Plattsburgh's 38 while outscoring them 30-8 in the paint. Cortland also produced 24 points off turnovers and got 31 points from their bench in the win.

Plattsburgh State falls to 3-7 with the loss, with their SUNYAC mark moving to 0-4, and will now face Oswego State at 1 p.m. tomorrow, Dec. 11, moved from the original noon start time. Cortland rises to 7-1 and 4-0 in conference play and will head to Potsdam tomorrow, Dec. 11, to face the Bears in SUNYAC play.

The first half was fairly competitive, as the Cardinals withstood some strong three-point shooting from Cortland to remain in contention. Couture got the scoring started for Plattsburgh with a layup to knot the score at two points apiece early. The Red Dragons led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but four three-pointers by the Cards throughout the first two periods helped keep it relatively close, as Cortland took a 34-24 lead into the break.

Out of the halftime break, two free throws by Wilbur brought the Cardinals back within single digits and the sophomore followed with a transition three in the team's next possession to make the score 34-29. After three made free throws from Couture, and then two more made free throws from Kortney McCarthy (Peru, N.Y./Peru) tied the game at 34. After missed layups from Cortland, Wilbur knocked down another three-pointer in transition to give the Cards their first lead of the game. The lead would be short-lived, however, as a Mullen three gave the Red Dragons the lead back, as they would not trail for the remainder of the game. Cortland finished the third quarter on a 16-0 run and then outscored Plattsburgh 20-2 in the fourth to finish the game on a huge run to pull away for the SUNYAC win.
