BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team came just short of an upset victory, falling to SUNY Geneseo, 5-4, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday morning at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
In doubles action, juniors
Samantha Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and
Nicole Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) won, 8-1, at the No. 3 spot, but Geneseo took a 2-1 lead heading into singles play by winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
While junior
Jackie Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) prevailed, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles to tie the match at 2-all, Geneseo won at the No. 3, No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, to clinch the victory. Junior
Sarah Benowitz (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) topped her opponent, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, while
Nicole Svantner closed the match with a 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-5) triumph at the No. 5 position.
Plattsburgh State falls to 4-5 overall (2-4 SUNYAC) with the loss and next faces Fredonia tomorrow at 9 a.m. in its SUNYAC finale. Geneseo rises to 4-4 overall (4-2 SUNYAC) with the win and squares off with SUNY Oneonta tomorrow at 12 p.m. in its final conference game.
