Villemaire Scores and Haley Posts Nine Saves in Shutout Win for Women's Soccer

CANTON, NY Lauren Haley (LaGrange, NY/Arlington) was outstanding in goal for the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team, as the sophomore posted a nine-save shutout to lead her team to the win over St. Lawrence. Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, NY/Beekmantown) scored the team's only goal in the second half to give the Cardinals a lead they would not relinquish.

With the win, the Cards improve to 6-4-1 overall, with a sparkling 5-1 record in non-conference play.  St. Lawrence endures just their second loss of the year, falling to 5-2-2 overall.

The first half looked to be in control of the Saints as they tested Haley in net throughout. St. Lawrence attempted 1o shots, putting five on goal, which amounted to five saves for the Cardinals' sophomore keeper. Plattsburgh attempted just three shots, as the game was played through the Saint's offense.

The second half was a complete turnaround from the first, as the Plattsburgh offense came out firing on all cylinders. This half saw the Cardinals outshoot St. Lawrence 10-5, in what was clearly a much more evenly played half. Villemaire put the game's only goal into the net with a shot in the 61st minute when Nora Fitzgerald (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) found the fifth-year forward in the box. Fitzgerald put the pass between two Saints defenders right into the path of Villemaire, who finished the play for her third goal of the season, putting her in the team lead with 10 points on the season.

The Cardinal defense in the second period stepped up big time, allowing just one shot from the Saints after the Villemaire goal. Haley's nine saves were also the most by a Card's goalie since Julia Ennis (Carmel, NY/Kennedy) had 10 saves versus Skidmore on Sept.18 of last year.

The Cardinals welcome Oswego State to Plattsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 8 for a SUNYAC matchup. The following day, Oct. 9, will see #5 William Smith come to town for an exciting non-conference tilt.
