GENESEO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team dropped a 77-38 decision to SUNY Geneseo in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest Saturday afternoon at Schrader Gymnasium.
The Cardinals shot 21.1 percent (12-of-57) from the floor and 88.9 percent (8-of-9) from the free-throw line. The Knights, meanwhile, were 50.8 percent (31-of-61) from the field and held a 48-32 edge in rebounds.
First-year forward
Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y./Saranac) led the Cardinals with seven points and five rebounds, while senior guard
Kayla Doody (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) grabbed eight boards and handed out two assists.
For Geneseo, sophomore guard Kiley Snow and senior forward Megan Roell scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, while first-year guard Mackenzie Reigle and sophomore forward Kerry Dennin netted 11 and 10 points, respectively, coming off the bench.
Plattsburgh State slips to 5-13 overall (2-9 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits SUNY Cortland on Friday, Feb. 4. Geneseo rises to 10-8 overall (7-5 SUNYAC) with the win and next hosts Buffalo State on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 5:30 p.m.
The Cardinals started out strong out of the gates, with junior guard
Mya Smith (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), junior forward
Hannah Ruberto (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) and junior guard
Kanesha Strider (Long Island, N.Y./Longwood) each scoring to give Plattsburgh State a 6-1 lead. Geneseo then went on a 14-1 run to go out in front, 15-7. A free throw by Roell with 27 seconds left in the first quarter gave the Knights an 18-9 advantage, which stood as the score through 10 minutes of play.
While Geneseo opened up a 10-point lead early in the second quarter, Plattsburgh State went on a 6-2 tear, with sophomore guard
Brinley Inglee (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) cutting the gap to six with a 3-pointer. Couture countered a Knight layup with a trey, but Geneseo responded by scoring 13 unanswered points and took a 39-21 cushion into the locker rooms.
The Knights scored the first seven points of the third quarter before junior forward
Misa Dowdell (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Scholars Academy) broke up the surge with a jumper. Geneseo opened its lead up to 31, but the Cardinals retaliated with five unanswered points, with Couture capping the run with a pair of free throws. The Knights wound up taking a 58-28 edge through three quarter of action.
Following a made basket by Geneseo's junior guard Hannah Stockman to open the fourth quarter, Inglee hit a 3-pointer and Ruberto made a layup. The Knights closed out the game on a 17-5 tear to come away with the 77-38 victory.
