Women's Basketball Tops Oswego, 73-43, For First SUNYAC Win of 2021-22

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team outscored visiting Oswego State in every quarter, topping the Lakers by a 73-43 final in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at Memorial Hall on Friday afternoon for its first conference win of the season.
 
Junior guard Mya Smith (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and first-year guard Hope Sullivan (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) led the Cardinal attack with 17 and 15 points, respectively, while senior forward Kelly Degnan (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) and sophomore guard Brinley Inglee (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively, coming off the bench. First-year forward Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y./Saranac) grabbed 10 rebounds, while Doody distributed eight assists.
 
For Oswego, senior guards Raiven Encarnacion and Danielle Caivana registered 12 and 11 points, respectively, while first-year guard/forward Elaina Johnson pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
The Cardinals shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69) from the field—including a 47.4 percent (9-of-19) mark from distance—while limiting the Lakers to 20 percent (15-of-75) shooting from the floor. Plattsburgh State finished with a 54-48 edge in rebounds.
 
Plattsburgh State rises to 4-8 overall (1-4 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits Fredonia on Monday, Jan. 17, at 5:30 p.m. Oswego falls to 3-9 overall (0-6 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 5:30 p.m.
 
The Cardinals never trailed in the contest, scoring the first eight points of the game. Sullivan fired the opening salvo with a layup 1:00 into the game, while Smith scored on back-to-back possessions. Junior forward Misa Dowdell (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Scholars Academy) put Plattsburgh State on top, 8-0, with a made jumper to cap the run. Oswego scored the final four points of the first quarter to cut the gap in half (8-4) heading into the second quarter.
 
The two teams traded points in the early going of the second quarter until Plattsburgh State went on an 11-1 tear, and a jumper by Sullivan with 50 seconds left in the period staked the Cardinals to a 27-11 cushion. Encarnacion hit a jumper with two seconds left in the stanza to whittle the Laker deficit to 27-13 at the half.
 
Plattsburgh State inched ahead in the third quarter, slowly extending its lead despite Oswego scoring 17 points, the most it netted in any quarter all game. The Cardinals closed the third quarter with a 5-0 tear, and a layup by Couture with three seconds to go in the period handed the home team a 49-30 edge heading into the final quarter.
 
The Cardinals drilled five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter alone, the first of which came from Smith on the opening possession of the period. Plattsburgh State's biggest lead of the game (30 points) occurred in the final minute of play, as sophomore forward Caitlin Kolesar (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) knocked down a pair of free throws with 38 seconds left.
