Women's Volleyball Defeats Canton, Falls to St. Lawrence to Close Out North Country Classic

CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team wrapped up action at the North Country Classic Saturday with a split, defeating SUNY Canton, 3-0 (25-19, 25-7, 25-14), before falling to St. Lawrence University, 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-21).
 
Plattsburgh State moves to 4-3 overall with the results and next hosts SUNY Potsdam in its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m. Canton drops to 0-7 overall with the loss and next squares off with St. John Fisher College (4 p.m.) and Utica College (8 p.m.) on the opening day of the Oswego State Tournament on Friday, Sept. 17, while St. Lawrence rises to 4-4 overall with the win and also meets up with St. John Fisher (6 p.m.) on the first day of the Oswego State Tournament on Friday, Sept. 17.
 
Plattsburgh State 3, Canton 0 (25-9, 25-7, 25-14)
 
The Cardinals put together their most dominant performance so far this season against Canton, fashioning a .420 hitting percentage on 36 kills and seven errors in 69 total attempts. Plattsburgh State also held the upper hand in service aces (14-1), blocks (4-0) and digs (39-22).
 
Senior middle hitter Ann Beauchamp (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) keyed a balanced attack with nine kills and a .583 hitting percentage, while sophomore defensive specialist/outside hitter Payton Zophy (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) nearly had a double-double with eight kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter Emma Rivers (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown West) landed a career-high seven service aces and doled out 14 assists, while senior setter/defensive specialist Olga Muka (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity Diocesan) also distributed 14 assists in the Cardinals' 6-2 offense.
 
St. Lawrence 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-21)
 
The Saints put up a stout defense in the nightcap, tallying 62 digs to the Cardinals' 49 in a three-set match while holding a 7-6 edge in blocks. St. Lawrence also owned a 7-6 advantage in service aces and pieced together a .182 hitting percentage.
 
Beauchamp hit .500 for the match, converting four kills out of eight swings. Rivers and Muka combined for 12 assists, while Muka notched three service aces. Defensively, Zophy defended 16 digs, while senior middle hitter Alicia Fisher (Brooklyn, N.Y./Science Skills) notched four total blocks (one solo, three assist).
 
For St. Lawrence, senior outside hitter/right side Annika Kreppein led the way with 11 kills and 13 digs, while junior setter/defensive specialist Allie Posnick handed out 27 assists. Sophomore right side/middle hitter Vivian Zymeck provided the bulk of the Saints' blocking presence with five total blocks (one solo, four assist).
