PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — In its season-opening match, Plattsburgh State women's soccer fought back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 double-overtime tie against Castleton University in non-conference action on Wednesday night at the Field House Complex.
Plattsburgh State (0-0-1) controlled most of the play early in the match, but Castleton (0-0-1) took advantage of two scoring opportunities to go in front, 2-0. Rylee Nichols scored both Castleton goals. After a Plattsburgh State turnover led to a rush for Castleton, Nichols took a pass in the box from Julia Carone and finished with a shot into the lower-right side of the net in the eighth minute. Then after a foul outside the top of the box, Nichols would score on a free kick in the 38th minute with a shot that bounced down off the crossbar and just behind the goal line.
The Cardinals fought back and got on the scoreboard in the 44th minute to make the score 2-1 going into halftime. Senior forward Emily Frodyma (Watervliet, N.Y./Catholic Central) played a through ball ahead from midfield that found sophomore midfielder Avery Durgan (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) racing into the left side of the box. Durgan finished with a shot with her left foot that found the lower-right corner of the net for her first collegiate goal.
In the second half, the Cardinals remained down, 2-1, until the 79th minute when senior midfielder Allison Seidman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) scored to tie the game at 2-2. Frodyma played a pass from the right to Seidman as she made a run towards the top of the box. Seidman ran onto the ball and scored with a shot from close range.
The score remained tied and went to overtime. the Cardinals had the majority of the scoring chances in overtime as they outshot the Spartans 6-2 during the two overtime periods. However, neither team scored and the game ended tied at 2-2.
Junior goalkeeper Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) is 0-0-1 on the season after making four saves for the Cardinals. Alex Benfatti (0-0-1) stopped 10 shots in goal for the Spartans.
Plattsburgh State outshot Castleton 25-10, including 12-6 in shots on goal.
