PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe SUNY Cortland on Sunday at Chip Cummings Field. The Cardinals lost game one, 11-0, and game two, 15-5.
Plattsburgh State is now 4-12 (3-9 SUNYAC) and Cortland is 20-4 (11-1 SUNYAC) on the season.
Game 1: SUNY Cortland 11, Plattsburgh State 0
Plattsburgh State was shut out, 11-0, as SUNY Cortland scored runs in six different innings in game one.
Cortland, which outhit Plattsburgh State 14-7, scored two runs in the first inning, single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, five runs in the seventh inning and one run in the eighth inning.
Plattsburgh State's senior right-handed pitcher
Chase Blazak (Antrim, N.H./Bishop Guertin) allowed two runs in the first inning, but worked out of further trouble. Blazak (0-5) settled down and did not allow another run until the fourth inning. On the day, he limited Cortland to four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks over five innings pitched.
Plattsburgh State's offense was unable to solve Cortland's Ryan Flansburgh (4-0), who started on the mound, and Dan Hobbs who combined for the shutout. Flansburgh scattered seven hits over seven innings, while walking one batter and striking out five. Hobbs retired all six batters he faced over the final two innings of the game.
Senior shortstop
Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) and sophomore third baseman
Christian Ott (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) each went 2-for-4 at the plate for Plattsburgh State.
Four Red Dragons had multi-hit performances, including center fielder Scott Giordano who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, three RBI and a solo home run.
Game 2: SUNY Cortland 15, Plattsburgh State 5

Erik Matz (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), sophomore second baseman
Andrew Veit (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) and Bryant had two hits each for the Cardinals, but Plattsburgh State suffered a 15-5 defeat to SUNY Cortland in game two.
Cortland took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Plattsburgh State made the score 3-1 on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of junior right-fielder
Aaron Roman (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) in the bottom half of the inning.
However, the Red Dragons would then add on single runs in the first and second innings and three runs in the top of the fourth inning to put Plattsburgh State down, 8-1.
Veit made the score 8-2 with an RBI double to right field for Plattsburgh State in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Cortland would further extend its lead to 12-2 with three runs in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth.
The Cardinals had their highest-scoring inning of the day with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score, 12-5. One run scored on a fielder's choice to second base off the bat of first-year catcher
Angel Espinal (New York, N.Y./East Side Community) and Matz drove in the other two runs with a double to left-center field.
However, The Cardinals would not get any closer and the Red Dragons tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 15-5.
Senior right-hander
Matt Triola (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), who started for Plattsburgh State, is now 1-3 on the season. Triola was charged with five runs (one earned) on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts over three innings pitched.
Shane Mugnolo started on the mound for Cortland, but did not factor into the decision. Mugnolo allowed two runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings. Will McCarthy (1-0), who pitched the final three innings, was credited with the victory. McCarthy allowed three runs on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Cortland held a 15-9 edge in hits.
