PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team closed out its non-conference slate with a 21-5 loss to No. 7 St. Lawrence University on Tuesday evening at the Field House Complex.
The Cardinals were led once again by junior goalie
Christian Bassi (Windham, N.H./Kimball Union Academy), who matched his career high from Saturday against Union College with 20 saves. Bassi played the first three quarters before senior goalie
Kyle Dodge (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) took over for the fourth. St. Lawrence's sophomore goalie Elliott LaGorce turned aside seven shots in the victory.
The Saints finished with a 67-16 margin in shots and a 56-28 advantage in ground balls. St. Lawrence went 20-for-21 on clear attempts, while Plattsburgh State was 18-for-31 in transition. The Saints also went 21-for-28 at the 'X.' Plattsburgh State went 2-for-4 on extra-man opportunities, while St. Lawrence was 1-for-4 with the extra man.
Plattsburgh State falls to 1-3 overall with the loss and will look to get back in the win column on Friday, April 9, when it visits SUNY Potsdam for a 4 p.m. State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest. St. Lawrence rises to 4-0 overall with the win and next visits Union College on Saturday, April 10, at 3 p.m.
St. Lawrence's attack fired quickly, as it scored three goals in the opening 2:11 of the contest before eventually opening up an 8-0 lead with 2:15 to go in the first quarter. Senior midfielder
Stephen Kane (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) scored man-up on a feed from senior attackman
Connor Wolff (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) to put the Cardinals on the board with 1:11 remaining in the first quarter, which provided the score of 8-1 at the end of the stanza.
The Saints continued to pour on offense, scoring the first five goals of the second quarter. Kane found the back of the cage once again on a feed from first-year attackman
Brian Pohoreckyj (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) to break up the run, and after two more St. Lawrence goals, Pohoreckyj connected with Kane for a man-up score midway through the period. St. Lawrence's first-year midfielder/attackman Ben Hutchinson scored unassisted with 5:31 left in the third to give the Saints a 16-3 edge through three quarters of play.
Following two St. Lawrence goals to open up the fourth, sophomore midfielder
Amos Grimm (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) scored on a dish from sophomore attackman
Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), and while the Saints countered just 10 seconds later with a man-down goal, Grimm ripped a bounce pass from first-year attackman
John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) into the back of the net with 6:27 remaining in regulation. St. Lawrence scored the final two goals of the game.
Kane led the Cardinals with his fourth hat trick in as many games, scoring three goals. Grimm scored twice, while Pohoreckyj handed out two assists. Sophomore long-stick midfielder
Julian Pigliavento (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) paced the defense with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
For St. Lawrence, junior attackman Mark Mahoney tallied a game-high five points on a goal and four assists, while Hutchinson (three goals), senior midfielder Peter Koch (one goal, two assists) and senior midfielder Alex Mapstone (one goal, two assists) all recorded three points. Sophomore face-off specialist Jackson Lalonde went 13-for-17 at the 'X' and scooped up seven ground balls, while junior long-stick midfielder Joe Scarfi posted a team-high four caused turnovers.
