Baseball Drops Season-Opening Home Doubleheader to St. Lawrence

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball dropped both ends of its season-opening non-conference doubleheader with St. Lawrence University at Chip Cummings Field on Saturday afternoon. Plattsburgh State lost game one, 9-1, and game two, 13-2.

Plattsburgh State is now 0-2 on the season and St. Lawrence is 2-3.

"It was obviously not the result we were looking for," Plattsburgh State baseball head coach Kris Doorey said. "However, it was our first opportunity to gauge where we are at and I am confident we will be better our next time on the field."

Game 1: St. Lawrence 9, Plattsburgh State 1

Plattsburgh State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior first baseman Steve Messerschmitt (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Carmel) that scored sophomore second baseman Andrew Veit (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) from third base.

Behind senior right-handed starting pitcher Chase Blazak (Antrim, N.H./Bishop Guertin), who tossed four scoreless innings with four strikeouts, one walk and four hits allowed, Plattsburgh State held on to its 1-0 lead for the early part of the game.

However, St. Lawrence took a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a grand slam to left field off the bat of third baseman Andrew Circelli.

The Saints would not look back as they added single runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, and they scored three more runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 9-1.

Jack Sylvia started on the mound for St. Lawrence – limiting the Cardinals to one run on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk over four innings, but he did not factor into the decision. Cameron Morrissey (1-1) garnered the victory as he pitched three scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts and one hit allowed.

Senior right-hander Matt Triola (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) (0-1) suffered the loss as he surrendered four runs (three earned) on two hits over two innings pitched in relief. Triola struck out three and walked one.

Senior shortstop Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and junior center fielder Aaron Roman (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) each had two hits for Plattsburgh State.

Hits were 12-7 in favor of St. Lawrence. The Saints committed three errors and the Cardinals made one error.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 13, Plattsburgh State 2 (7 inn.)

St. Lawrence jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, before Plattsburgh State made the score 3-1 in the second inning with an RBI groundout off the bat of first-year designated hitter Zachary Stone (New Spring Hill, Fla./Weeki Wachee) that scored junior left fielder Dylan Reilly (Lawrence, N.Y./Holy Trinity Diocesan).

The Saints would score one run in the fourth inning, three runs in the fifth inning and six runs in the sixth inning to increase their lead to 13-1.

The Cardinals scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 13-2 when Veit raced home from third base on a wild pitch.

However, Plattsburgh State would not score again and fell, 13-2, in a scheduled seven-inning game.

Andrew Matthews (1-0) garnered the win for St. Lawrence. Matthews started and limited Plattsburgh State to one run on four hits, while striking out five and walking none over four innings pitched.

Junior right-hander Lucas Rodriguez (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown), who made his first start and appearance in a Cardinal uniform, fell to 0-1 after allowing three runs on four hits over two innings. Rodriguez struck out two and walked one.

Messerschmitt led the Cardinals with two hits in the game.

Drew Courtwright and Brian Comerford each had three-hit games for the Saints.

St. Lawrence held a 16-6 edge in hits.
