Women's Lacrosse Closes Out 2021 Campaign With 14-2 Loss to No. 17 Cortland

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team closed the book on its 2021 season on Monday afternoon, dropping a 14-2 decision to No. 17 SUNY Cortland in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at the Field House Complex. The Cardinals limited the Red Dragons to their lowest scoring output in SUNYAC games this year, tied with the 14 goals they scored against SUNY Oneonta on April 21.
 
It marked the final collegiate game for senior midfielder Frankie Porcaro (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport), the program's first-ever All-SUNYAC honoree as well as its career record holder in goals (52) and draw controls (88).
 
Cortland finished with the upper hand in shots (29-16), ground balls (20-15) and draw controls (10-8) and went 20-for-22 on clears. Plattsburgh State was 15-for-21 on clears and cashed in on one of the three free-position shots it took. Neither team sustained any carding infractions the entirety of the contest.
 
Plattsburgh State closes out its season at 2-6 overall (2-6 SUNYAC). Cortland rises to 10-1 overall (8-0 SUNYAC) with the win and owns the top seed in the SUNYAC East Division. The Red Dragons host West Division No. 2 seed SUNY Geneseo in the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals on Thursday, April 29, at 4 p.m.
 
Cortland broke a scoreless deadlock 4:45 into the contest when junior midfielder/defender Hannah Keech scored on a pass from senior attacker Cecilia Procopio, and the Red Dragons continued to hold the upper hand offensively in entering the halftime intermission with a 7-0 advantage.
 
After Cortland buried three more goals, sophomore midfielder/defender Caroline Noia (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) broke up the 10-goal running clock with an unassisted goal with 21:10 left in regulation. The Red Dragons scored four more times before sophomore midfielder Lindsay Guzzetta (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) tallied on a free-position shot with 4:00 remaining in the second half to round out scoring in the contest.
 
Porcaro controlled three draws, while sophomore defender/midfielders Emma McLaughlin (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Nikki Scioscia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) each scooped up three ground balls. Scioscia also caused two turnovers.
 
For Cortland, senior midfielder Hannah Lorenzen had six points on four goals and two assists, while Keech scored four times and senior attacker Emily Goebel found the back of the net on three occasions. Sophomore midfielder Kiki Meager controlled four draws, while Lorenzen and senior defender Kayla Petre each scooped up three ground balls. Defensively, first-year midfielder/defender Holly Wright, junior midfielder Shelby Meduski and Petre each caused two turnovers.
 
Junior goalie Alexa Cassidy (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) stopped 11 shots in goal for the Cardinals, while senior goalie Paige Potter made 11 saves against two goals against in the win for the Red Dragons.
