Softball Comes Back from Six Runs Down for 8-7 Walk-Off Victory on Senior Day; Cardinals Split Doubleheader with SUNY Cortland

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team came back from six runs down for an 8-7 walk-off victory over SUNY Cortland in game one on Senior Day. The Cardinals dropped game two, 9-1 in six innings, to split the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Saturday at Cardinal Park.

The game one victory was the Cardinals' first home win over Cortland since a 6-1 win on April 15, 2013.

With the split, Plattsburgh State is now to 7-7 (6-6 SUNYAC) on the season and Cortland is 12-6 (9-3 SUNYAC).

In between games, the Cardinals honored five student-athletes as a part of Senior Day festivities: infielder Alexandra Clifford (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa), outfielder Frannie Merkel (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster), infielder Bella Spadinger (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker), outfielder Madison Walker (Denver, Colo./Williamston [Mich.]) and catcher Hanna Whitney (Keene, N.Y./Keene Central).

Game 1: Plattsburgh State 8, SUNY Cortland 7

Plattsburgh State came back from six runs down to complete an 8-7 walk-off victory over SUNY Cortland in game one.

Cortland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of run-scoring singles by designated player Jess Miller and third baseman Alyssa Finno.

The Red Dragons then added three more runs in the second inning, including two runs that scored on a double off the bat of catcher Cailey Cuttita, to put Plattsburgh State down, 6-0.

After leaving two runners on base in the fourth inning, Plattsburgh State broke through against Karlee Weeden – who started in the circle for Cortland – for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Cortland lead to 6-4. Spadinger drove in the first run with a double to left-center field. Clifford drove in two runs with a single to center field and later came around to score from third base when the catcher made an error on a pickoff attempt.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Red Dragons scored what turned out to be their final run of the game on a double down the left-field line by left fielder Sabrina Caputo to make the score 7-4 in favor of Cortland.

In their final turn at bat in the game, Plattsburgh State scored four runs to complete its 8-7 walk-off victory. After Spadinger reached base on an error to start the inning and sophomore Julia Golino ((Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) later doubled to put runners on second and third base with one out, sophomore catcher Danielle Torres (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) drove in Spadinger and Golino with a ground-rule double down the left-field line that made the score 7-6. Later in the inning with two outs and runners on second and third base, Sophomore right fielder Alexa Murray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) doubled down the left-field line to score the tying and winning runs.

Golino, who started in the circle for Plattsburgh State, did not factor into the decision. She allowed six runs on 13 hits over five innings pitched, while striking out one batter and walking none. Sophomore pitcher Kristina Maggiacomo (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Mellville) improved to 5-3 after pitching the final two innings for Plattsburgh State. Maggiacomo held the Red Dragons to one unearned run on two hits. Maggiacomo did not record a walk or a strikeout.
