PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team split a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader with SUNY Oneonta on Sunday at Chip Cummings Field. Plattsburgh State dropped game one, 9-2, before rebounding for an 11-7 victory in game two.
With the doubleheader split, Plattsburgh State is now 2-6 (2-4 SUNYAC) on the season and Oneonta is 9-5 (4-4 SUNYAC).
Game 1: Oneonta 9, Plattsburgh State 2
Oneonta used a seven-run fourth inning to hand Plattsburgh State a 9-2 loss in game one.
Both starting pitchers pitched well through the first three innings as the score remained 0-0. Senior right-hander
Chase Blazak (Antrim, N.H./Bishop Guertin) started for Plattsburgh State and left-hander Sean Liquori started on the mound for Oneonta.
In the fourth inning, Oneonta scored seven runs to take a 7-0 lead over Plattsburgh State. After Oneonta loaded the bases with no one out, center fielder Patrick McGee was hit by a pitch to score the first run. Left fielder Liam Kaseta then cleared the bases with a three-run double to make the score 4-0. Later in the inning, right fielder Sean McGlynn added a sacrifice fly to increase the Red Dragon lead to 5-0. After hitting the next batter, Blazak was relieved by senior right-hander
Matt Triola (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs). The Red Dragons scored two more runs before Triola worked out of the inning with the score, 7-0.
The Cardinals responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score, 7-2. Sophomore second baseman
Conner Gonzalski (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), who had two hits in the game, drove in senior designated hitter
Steve Messerschmitt (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Carmel) from third base with a single to center field. Senior center fielder
Erik Matz (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) then doubled to left-center field, scoring junior right fielder
Aaron Roman (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial), who had walked earlier in the inning.
However, Plattsburgh State would not score again as Liquori, who improved to 3-0 on the season, tossed a 118-pitch nine-inning complete game for Oneonta. Liquori held the Cardinals to two runs on nine hits. He struck out eight and walked two.
Triola pitched well in relief, keeping the Red Dragons from adding to their lead until he ran into trouble in the top of the ninth inning. Oneonta scored two runs in the ninth inning to make the final score, 9-2.
Triola limited the Red Dragons to two runs on seven hits in five innings pitched. He walked two and struck out two. First year-right-hander
Daniel Strysko (Hillburn, N.Y./Suffern) got the final two outs for Plattsburgh State in relief of Triola.
Blazak, who fell to 0-3, was charged with seven runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked one batter and struck out three.
Game 2: Plattsburgh State 11, Oneonta 7

The Cardinals struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman first baseman
Zachary Stone drove in a run with a sacrifice fly (New Spring Hill, Fla./Weeki Wachee) and Messerschmitt drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

Jacob Hutton (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central).
The offense was more than enough for junior right-hander
Peter Gregory (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), who started for the Cardinals. Gregory (1-0) held Oneonta off the scoreboard until the sixth inning when he allowed one run to make the score 11-1. On the day, Gregory limited Oneonta to one unearned run on seven hits over six innings to earn his first win in a Cardinal uniform. He allowed two walks, struck out one, and threw 107 pitches.
Oneonta fought back to score six runs in the seventh inning, but Plattsburgh State held on for the 11-7 victory in a scheduled seven-inning game. Third baseman Jake Barrett had a grand slam for Oneonta in the seventh inning.
Senior shortstop
